Loyal fun. fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of their second album Some Nights, which finally dropped on February 21, 2012. The band which originally formed in 2008 includes former Format singer Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost, of Anathallo, and Jack Antonoff, of Steel Train. This is the second album from the New York band under Fueled by Ramen’s label.

Many listeners and fans will agree that Some Nights carries on a different sound and tone than their first album Aim and Ignite. The album has more of a hip-hop vibe and grander sound throughout each track. The songs at times seem to be designed to be a number one single, rather than a story or personal memory that listeners have felt in fun.’s first album and also in Nate Ruess’s previous band the Format.

The album starts out with two tracks titled “Some Nights” which slowly transform to strong baselines and roaring vocals. On the downside, it’s obvious from the start that auto tune will play a large role throughout the entire album. Listeners are then carried onto their number one single “We are Young.” Everyone has heard this sone one way or another, whether it was on a car commercial or an episode of Fox’s Glee. There is no doubt that this song belongs on the charts. It’s extremely catchy and features outstanding vocals from Janelle Monae.

The album goes on a roller coaster form here from Nate’s impressive vocals in “Carry On,” to “It Gets Better” with an overpowering drums beats and out of place electronic noises. The rest of the album seems to be more or less of a combination of Nate Ruess’s impressive vocals and different approaches to new techniques including a full on choir and orchestra.

It’s obvious that the band decided to go in a new direction with Some Nights. Fans, and those familiar with their “original” sound might have a hard time adjusting to the new album. The album has a couple catchy, upbeat songs, but the others you can almost do without. It’s as though the band has almost found the perfect combination of mainstream popularity with originality, but they have just a little bit to go.
