Last week at Denver’s SIA conference, I had the opportunity to check out the coolest hat companies on the market. The number of hat companies there was absolutely ridiculous so I’ve put together what I think are the five hottest!
If you’re in need of a new beanie or snowboard hats I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like from one of these brands.
AION is a group of designers and free thinkers living and working in Jackson Hole, San Francisco, San Diego, Australia, and Bali.
All of their products were made by craftsman making a fare wage. They’re not into sweatshops or underpaid workers- so they proudly put people before profits. Raise awareness about where, who, and how your products are made by purchasing one of their limited edition “don’t sweat it” tees at their jackson hole location, or online.
Probably the hottest “new exhibitor” at SIA this year was Skida. For it being their first time at the tradeshow, the Skida booth was constantly packed. I checked in occasionally to get some story ideas but was casually overtaken by curious buyers looking to add Skida hats to their inventory.
Founder and owner Corinne Prevot says “We believe in supporting our local community. Our entire collection is proudly made in Vermont, which allows us to provide you with an always-fresh collection. Our local production also inspires a unique connection to the greater Vermont community. Our sewers work from home in the northern part of the state, a region with a rich history in garment manufacturing. Supporting this local industry is just one element of Skida’s contribution to the community.”
Skida also developed Skida [+1], a program that enables Skida to donate hats to patients who are undergoing Chemotherapy on behalf of their online customers. The solution is collaborative: for every order that is submitted with a Skida [+1] promotional code, Skida will donate one hat to that corresponding cancer center.
Akinz was founded in 2005 in a studio apartment in Houston, TX by Suzanne Akin with the wings logo and the accompanying motto, “Find Your Wings.” The Akinz motto which sometimes shows up in the t-shirt designs and is the foundation of the wings logo encourages men and women to find the one thing that motivates them to push life to the limit and reach for the sky.
Alright here is a tear-jerker but it is something beautiful as well. They make hats, beautiful hats, and donate to an incredible organization, the MaxLove project.
Inspired by SuperMax Wilford, a six-year-old fighting brain cancer, MaxLove Project is a 100% volunteer-driven, grassroots nonprofit organization founded to help SuperKids thrive against cancer and life-threatening conditions.
Their mission is to provide families fighting childhood cancers and life-threatening conditions with accessible, practical, and kid-friendly whole-body wellness. There ultimate goal is to support SuperKids in overcoming the odds—to thrive in treatment and beyond. They believe that all kids should have full acces to every cancer-fighting tool available, including excellent nutrition and therapeutic resources such as acupuncture, physical activity, and healing narratives.

Head to any apres location and you’re bound to see a bunch of the classic five-panel hats that Chuck has popularized through their creative and authentic patterns! So there ya have it, five new hats to add to your collection!
Every snowboarder needs to have a good beanie or two on lock. In addition to keeping the old head warm while out on the slopes, a beanie is the perfect accessory for just about anywhere: at the lodge, at the bar, or just sitting around the house. These days they are as much of a fashion statement as a way to stay warm.
A few of our favorite beanies include:
Elm Company Newcomb Beanie
Elm has been doing it right lately where skate/snow lifestyle gear is concerned. And their Newcomb Beanie is no different. While it’s not the warmest beanie in the world, it provides the right amount of warmth for most days on the mountain. Better yet, it’s light enough that you don’t have to take it off when you enter the lodge. The Elm Newcomb Beanie also looks good, is available in a wide variety of colors, and comes with an Elm leather patch.
Elm Company Dakota Beanie
While the Elm Newcomb Beanie is your traditional “no frills” beanie, the Elm Dakota Beanie is the exact opposite. Complete with pom-pom and eye-catching Aztec design, the Dakota shouts for attention while the Newcomb is content with blending into the crowd. In addition to flashy good looks, the Dakota Beanie is as warm, comfortable, and durable as beanies come.
Neff Daily Beanie
The Neff Daily Beanie is another beanie that does its job well while still looking stylish. Warm and comfy, the Daily Beanie was one of Neff’s first creations and is a style that is pretty much timeless. Worn without a fold and with a ribbed knit throughout, you’d be wack not to have a Daily Beanie of your own. And, heck, it’s available in over a dozen colors so you’re sure to find one that you’ll be down to wear on the daily.
Neff Fold Beanie
As its name suggests, the Neff Fold Beanie is designed to be worn with the lower portion folded up (unlike the Daily). It features a solid classic folded look with ribbed knitting throughout. The Neff Fold Beanie is extremely soft and always comfortable. Like the Daily, you can cop it in any number of colors.
Beanie styles come and beanie styles go. But these four beanies are always in. They look dope, are warm as heck, and are so comfortable you’ll probably forget you’re wearing them in the first place. They are our favorite beanies of 2013/2014.
