2012 Olympic Athletes
There are few televised athletic events that bring members from around the world together to compete and viewers worldwide together to cheer them on. The Olympics is one such event that has captured a global audience consistently for many many years. Arguably, the only time the general public cares in much about athletes competing in the high dive or trampoline gymnastics, the Olympics are a unique event. But, what there is no denying is that the Olympics makes up one massive entertainment event that only happens every four years.
London 2012 is shaping up to be no different than past years. With shocking upsets at various Olympic Trials events and astounding competitions already aligning, this Olympics is sure to not disappoint on the entertainment factor. But, what is it that makes this event so captivating for audiences? These athletes represent the best of the best of our country. They are the alpha athletes who act as representatives of each of our individual strengths as members of a nation. Through completely spellbinding training, determination, skill, and heart, these athletes become the fastest, strongest, and best competitors to ever live. It really is amazing. These four U.S. Olympic team hopefuls are some of the most astounding colligate, national, and world competitors in their sports today.
Colligate Athletes to Watch in London 2012
Ashton Eaton – Men’s Track and Field
A recent graduate from the University of Oregon, Eaton was the team’s standout male athlete in track and field. Winning the NCAA Championship title for the decathlon in 2008 and 2009 as well as the heptathlon title in 2009 for the NCAA Indoor Championships, it’s no surprise that Eaton is competing on a world stage. Eaton competed in the 2012 Olympic Trials and broke the standing world record by more than 10 points in the decathlon. This one time colligate star has rightfully turned his sights to Olympic gold and is a man to keep your eye on in the upcoming games.
Brittney Griner – Women’s Basketball
Griner is a three-time All-American women’s basketball player at Baylor University in Texas. She was quick to make headlines for her skill and strength even as a freshman on the college team and is the only college player in the group of athletes selected as finalists for the USA Basketball Women’s National Team. It is from this group that players are selected to represent the U.S. in the London Olympics. Griner is one of the nation’s top players, becoming only the second woman to dunk in the NCAA tournament and carrying her team to victory endless times as the point leader, rebound leader, and blocked shots leader each time. Griner is a likely candidate for the London Olympic team and is certainly a face to look for.
Nathan Adrian – Men’s Swimming
The path of the student athlete is certainly not an easy one. Finding a balance between training and competing at the level you want to and maintaining your academics at the caliber you expect is no simple feat. Nathan Adrian is perhaps too familiar with the struggles of the student athlete. Now holding a bachelor’s degree in public health from the University of California, Adrian moves on to the Olympic Trials in Omaha. He is the national favorite for the 100 meter freestyle event and is expected to be a part of the previously winning 400 free relay again in London. With so many big names in the water this year, Adrian is not one to be overlooked.
