Its the middle of hunting season. Are you prepared for the unexpected? Keep it simple and stay safe with these hunting essentials:
Filson Upland Hunting Vest
Bird hunting is a fun and exciting sport for both young and old enthusiasts. A great upland game vest can make your day more enjoyable. The Filson Upland Hunting Vest has a rear loading game bag which makes storing birds a breeze while you continue to hunt. The vest stores up to 12 shells, has two deep pockets in the front and a zipper pocket on the inside. Overall a nice article of clothing that states a classy hunter has entered the field.
Ariat Centerfire Boot
A solid pair of boots is absolutely critical in terms of a having either a great hunt or the unbearable. The Ariat Centerfire Boot bhave an 8 inch top to keep dirt, sticks, and rocks from going where they shouldn’t. 800 grams of insulation is nice because its not to bulky for early season hunting, plus you can always add a wool sock for trudging around in the snow. Water proof and slip resistant soles are necessary for climbing on rocks or hunting in the rain, with the Ariat Centerfire Boots on you can rest assured that you will always be sure footed.
I would suggest you buy these boots(any pair for that matter) a month in advance and wear them around inside your house. You can get the feel of the boots to make sure they aren’t to big or to small before heading out in the field.
A GPS is an essential item for any remote activity. Spot’s Gen3 has some unique features that we like. The S.O.S option is a nice feature in case an unfortunate injury or situation occurs. Offers a good range for temperature(-30 ) and altitude (21,000+). Check in feature to let family know your okay (maybe even allow people to follow your hunt while its in progress). The S.O.S option is a nice in case an unfortunate injury or situation occurs.
A few notes before heading out with your GPS. Know how to properly triangulate your gps unit for optimum reception( 3 satellites the last time I checked ) and what the reception indicator looks like on your GPS unit. Keep it dry and in a safe and secure place to reduce potential risk of damage from slips, trips, or falls. Bring an extra set of batteries for back up. Know your terrain and carry a compass for backup.
Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ
Oakley’s High Definition Optics do a couple things well for hunting. First of all it will be almost impossible to find a safer pair of shooting glasses. Oakley actually test’s their glasses by shooting high powered high-mass and high-velocity rounds at the lenses. Throw in a pair of VR28 lenses which are special designed for shooting clays against a blue or grey sky and your some what cheating out in the field. Actually you might find yourself relying less on your dog and and spending more time scanning tree tops in search of grouse as the Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ make spotting birds really easy.
Best of all the KING’S CAMO FLAK JACKET® XLJ edition comes in a Woodsman Camo colorway. If your going to hunt, go big or go home.
If the weathers nice and you are traveling long distance perhaps consider the Puma Ortholite shoes
Dakine Hunter Balaclava
The Dakine Hunter Balaclava arrived mid way through hunting season so our testing of this has been somewhat limited for hunting. However it does work really well for keep snowing off my beard, and for staying warm when temperatures drop below zero while snowboarding. What makes this balaclava stand out from the rest of the pack? Well the hunter orange for one. With this much orange around your dome you can feel safe while out hunting with your friends, that is unless you happen to be friends with Dick Cheney.
The mid weight fleece is a perfect addition to your backcountry pack.
Volcom JLA Hoodie
You no longer have to look like a kook walking through town in your hunting gear, turn some heads and add some style on your next hunting outing with the Volcom JLA Fleece Hoodie. The JLA Fleece pays homage to professional snowboarder and Volcom athlete “Jeffy” Jeff Anderson who passed away in 2003. What makes this fleece unique is a couple things. First off it has Jeffy’s artwork on the front, a simple drawn snowboard and bindings. It make a statement, along with text scribbled across the back that reads I’m not new to this, I’m true to this.
Zippered pockets keep everything in place and the fit is what Volcom calls true fit, or as I like to call it, tall-t fit.
