Winter X Games to Stay in Aspen for 2 More Years

Aspen, Colorado – The Winter X Games will be staying at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen for another 2 years. An agreement between ESPN and the Aspen Skiing Company was reached to keep Winter X in Aspen for the 12th and 13th consecutive years.

The first Winter X Games was held in California at Snow Summit Mountain Resort in 1997, then it moved to Crested Butte, Colorado for 2 years( not sure how Crested Butte ever gave up such a great event) before moving east to Mount Snow, Vermont before finding its current home in Aspen since 2002.

Each years thousands of fans, competitors and families flock to Aspen in January to take part in the Winter X Games tradition.

ESPN is thrilled to extend its relationship with Aspen Skiing Company, the City of Aspen, Pitkin County and Town of Snowmass
Village for two more years, said Scott Guglielmino, senior vice president of programming and X Games. After 11 fantastic years of world-class competition and progression in Aspen, were delighted to move into the new phase of X Games growth towards a global youth and lifestyle brand with one of our most long-term and valued relationships.

I would say attending the Winter X Games is a right of passage for any skiers or snowboarders in the United States. In fact that’s how this news organization began many moons ago when an aspiring snowboard photographer applied for credentials to the X Games and was told he needed to be working for a media outlet, some how the Mountain Weekly News was the first thing to come to mind :)

This has been an exemplary partnership of these two amazing brands, said John Rigney, vice president of sales and events for Aspen Skiing Company. A gigantic thank you goes to the entire Aspen/Snowmass community for its vision, support and commitment to this great event that is very much a part of our resort’s identity.
