Trashcan Sinatras Interview

Put yourself back into Mr. Peabody’s WABAC machine to the year 1990 and listen to the Trashcan Sinatras you will be in quite a surprise. Their debut album ‘Cake’ with the top 20 hit “Obscurity Knocks”. This was a band that I almost forgot till I heard a clip and it brought a smile to my face as I remembered the simple happy love song. Now fast forward to 2011 and that same band is producing music and still touring with a strong fan base. Paul Livingston (lead guitar), Frank Reader (vocals/acoustic guitar), and John Douglas (rhythm guitar/backing vocals) are the three original members and joining them are Stephen Douglas(drums/percussion).

The Trashcan Sinatras will be performing this coming Monday March 28 at The Walnut Room 3131 Walnut Street in Denver; tickets are $15 in advance and $18 day of the show. They will be playing an acoustic set in support of their latest album, ‘In the Music’. I had a few moments to chat with John on their off day before their next show in Chicago.

MWN: What do you find is the key to the bands longevity?
JD: I think that we have a unique quality in our songwriting we tend to be more thoughtful with what we write.

MWN: I agree that song writing is skill, I remember as a kid I would listen to America or Chicago and I could “see” what they were singing about.
JD: Exactly a lot of the songwriters back in the 60’s and 70’s put more thought in to the lyrics back then. Today some people write what is happing to them right now but is it really relevant in six months or a year from now?

MWN: Have you done many acoustic shows here in the U.S.? And if so which do you prefer?
JD: We did a two week acoustic tour of the west coast last year and we have done a lot of in studio radio session work. I prefer to do the acoustic as we are able to draw from more of a wider catalogue of music to perform, and also we don’t have to spend as much time in rehearsals as we would if we did use our amps.

MWN: What type of equipment do you use for your acoustic shows?
JD: Well I have just my acoustic guitar as does Frank, Paul has a mini plug in amp that he uses with several antique pedals that give it a lot of color and Steve has his percussion set up, and the three of us sing and we have good harmony together.

MWN: The music industry that has changed so much with the use of the internet since you have been a band. Have you been able to reach a wider audience, or have had more ease in distrusting your albums?
JD: The internet has been good for us. We use it to post short video clips and messages and photos on our web site so we use the internet a lot.

MWN: Kind of like a Trashcan You Tube?
JD: Yeah kind of like that, we have instant access to our fans and that is great. It is still important to have the backing money of management and of the industry. There is a lot of good bands out there that are being missed just because they don’t have the backing of record company.

MWN: Being back out on the road are you enjoying reconnecting the fans, and should we expect albums from the Trashcan Sinatras in the future?
JD: We do enjoy meeting the fans we usually spend about 30 minutes to an hour after each show just hanging out and meeting them. The diversity of our fans is great. We have mothers and fathers bringing their teenagers to the shows, all the way up to having really sharp dressed 50 year olds.

MWN: 50?! Wow!
JD: I know! It is really great to meet the people on a personal basis. As for the next album we writing here and there, so we’re hoping to have something released here early next year.

MWN: Well John that’s all the questions I have, I want to say it’s been a pleasure talking with you and I look forward to your show here in Denver at The Walnut Room.
