Top 10 Backpacking Snacks of 2021

Country Archer Beef Jerky

Nothing compares to the energy and feeling you get from eating grass-fed beef or all-natural turkey meat. So when we got the chance to test out a bunch of mouth-watering energy food aka Beef Jerky from Country Archer based in San Bernardino, California we were super stoked. The brands Honey Mustard Jerky is “mouth-watering goodness packed full of protein, you can’t just eat one piece.” So if this jerky is soo good how come it’s not on your radar, yet? Well, these guys have been making homemade beef jerky since 1977, and for a while, mostly just sold on the side of the road at those Beef Jerky stands you see from time to time. Well, the secrets out now, and with 8 flavors (6 beef and 2 turkey) to chose from Country Archer will soon become one of your favorite jerky snacks.

R.E.D.D. Bars

A Peanut Butter Bar that’s “easy to digest great for nibbling on the trail” comes to use from R.e.d.d. a new up and coming brand that’s focusing on Superfood rich snack bars. Each bar is packed with 10g protein, 23 vitamins + minerals and just the right amount of natural caffeine 36mg. The company’s backstory is classic, a guy finds himself in college and has run through his allocated meal plan expenses. Instead of going hungry R.e.d.d. founder Alden Blease started to make his own energy food with nuts and seeds and such. His little concoctions soon become popular in his dorm room as the brand started to plant seeds. One of the best bars for cycling on this list.

Munk Pack Cookies

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie from Munk Pack – “A peanut butter chocolate chip cookie packed with 18 grams of plant proteins” are you noticing a trend here? All of our summer snack foods are packed with Protein and Munk offers up the most delicious snack on this list. With flavors like Double Dark Chocolate, Oatmeal Raisin Spice and more you might do a double-take to make sure you’re actually eating something healthy. And good luck only eating one of these at a time. They do have 16 grams of sugar per serving, however, the Vegan-friendly treat makes up for it in other ways no gluten, no soy, no dairy and no eggs. Munk’s backstory is like many other brands on here, the founders wanted healthy food packed with power that tastes great.

Safe Catch Tuna

Mercury yuck, additives yuck, luckily for us some of the best-packaged tuna you can eat comes from Safe Catch Tuna which has none of the nonsense. Instead, Safe Catch Tuna offers low impact caught tuna that’s hand packed. And not all the tuna even makes the cut, About 1 out of 3 tuna tested does not pass Safe Catch Tuna’s strict purity standards for Mercury levels. These pouches are easy to pack and make for a great snack lunch or even dinner. You might be wondering where the fishy smell went?

GoMacro Bars

Who would have thought that eating like a Vegan could actually taste good? Well, GoMacro might be the first company to offer a high protein snack bar that’s not only palatable but the energy transferred from these little bars to your body is extremely noticeable. Some of my favorite flavors are, (and I hope you’re not hungry as you read this article..) is the GoMarco Everlasting Joy. This bar comes packed with organic, all-natural ingredients including Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Almond Butter, Organic Sprouted Brown Rice Protein, Organic Pea Protein, Organic Puffed Brown Rice, Organic Coconut Sugar, Organic Cocoa, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Unsweetened Coconut, Organic Almonds. – Do you see anything in the list of ingredients that’s unhealthy, or questionable for that matter? I surely don’t! Even the sugar content on a bar loaded with this much flavor is reasonable at 12 grams per serving. I liked 10 out of the 11 flavors of these bars. The only one that didn’t sit well with my taste buds was the sunflower butter. Do yourself a favor and go find these bars at your local health food store, if they don’t carry them well simply ask them too. Your mind, body, and community will surely thank you for going macro.. *These bars are a little on the chewy side.

RX Bars

Now I clearly dig the bars I mentioned above, however, I am fully addicted to RX Bars and for good reason. RX Bars come loaded with 12 grams of protein per bar, and the brand’s transparency in regards to ingredients is something to take note of. My favorite bar in the RX Bar line of 6 bars is the Mint Chocolate Chip. The ingredients are as follows: Dates, Egg Whites, Almonds, Cashews, Cacao, Peppermint Oil, Sea Salt. But what sets this company apart from any others I have seen is they mention on the front of the packaging just how many of each ingredient went into the bar. Confused? Let me explain. The Mint Chocolate Chip RX Bar is made with 3 egg whites, 4 almonds, 6 cashews, 2 dates and according to the company “nobs” well we could not agree more. The days of putting random food in our bodies are long gone. So how does a bar with only limited ingredients actually taste? Well, I can say that out of everything mentioned in this article, nothing compares to the flavors found within the RX line of bars. I find myself routinely buying handfuls of these bars anytime I am at the supermarket. I am fully hooked on the flavors, ingredients and possibly the 14 grams of sugar per serving. Even with the natural sugar content, these bars can and should be included in everyone’s diet. *These bars are bit firmer than the ones listed above – pretty much the perfect consistency.

All Natural Angus Wyoming Ranches Beef Jerky

If anyone from Wyoming Gourmet Beer ends up reading this, please reach out. I would love to be sponsored by your company. Now for everyone else, this is hands down the best beef jerky you will ever try. Fresh, soft, moist, succulent I could go on for days. Without making it yourself it will be hard to find quality like this in a store. Having easily purchased over 100 bags of the Honey flavor and even peppered flavor too I have yet to find a bad batch of this beef jerky. In fact, I pick up a pack or two every time I’m at the grocery store, and for good reason. Wyoming Ranches Beef Jerky comes loaded with 10 grams of protein per serving (3.5 servings per pack), zero sugar and all the “good fats” your body wants and needs. I feel primal when I eat this beef jerky, I know that I’m getting the fuel my body and the often overlooked mind needs. The Honey flavor (my favorite) comes with the following ingredients: ANGUS BEEF, HONEY, WATER, RAW CANE SUGAR, SEA SALT, BLACK PEPPER, CELERY JUICE POWDER, DRIED GARLIC. When you can read and pronounce the ingredients and better yet actually know what these things are, well that typically = healthy, all-natural foods. The only hiccup with this beef jerky, as with most things in life you get what you pay for and this stuff ain’t cheap especially considering All Natural Angus Wyoming Ranches Beef Jerky retails at around $10 a pack for 3.5 ounces. That’s over $40lb, I am in the wrong business 🙂 I did find out though in researching this article that you can buy this beef jerky direct for $83 per case of 12 packs. So that’s the route I will be moving towards in the future. Still not cheap, but the alternatives are nothing to mess with…

Turkey Jerky

I didn’t think it was possible to out due the succulent taste of the original Perky Jerky that we reviewed back in September, that’s until I received a package of the new Turkey Jerky. With fewer calories and sodium than the original Perk Jerky, yet with the same great taste jerky lovers across the country are rejoicing at the news of a new addition to the Perk Jerky line. Once you try the moist and tender Turkey Jerky it will be hard to go back to the leather stuff you find at your local gas station. Made from natural ingredients, Turkey Jerky is low fat, low carb, low cal, and high in protein. Best of all there are no preservatives, no nitrates, and no added MSG. And to top it all off Guarana is added to the meat to give you an extra pep in your step.

Decedent luxury was the first thing that came to mind when I took my first bite into a Squarebar. If I was opening a chain of luxury hotels, these are the chocolates that I would want on the pillows. However, there is more to the Squarebar then a bar of fancy chocolate. Squarebar tastes incredible and best of all they are organic!! I have no idea how they were able to blend all the natural ingredients together to perfection.

We also sampled the Cocoa Crunch and Cocoa Almond, both great flavors but our favorite hands down were the Cocoa Coconut. Now I just need to figure out where to buy these near me. Squarebar is available for purchase at specialty markets, groceries and spas across the country.

Clif Bar Builder Bars

Packed with 20 grams of Protein the Builder Bars are a must-have when pushing your body to extreme limits. The instant energy is a welcome relief during times of exhaustion. The flavors available are amazing, it’s like a candy bar packed with protein and carbohydrates. My favorite Builder Bar and this was by no accident was the Chocolate Mint, as my mom supposedly lived on that flavor of ice cream while she was pregnant with me. Clif Bar absolutely dialed in the flavors but with such great taste comes a little kickback. 20 grams of sugar is a lot for a bar, the equivalent of 4 sugar cubes, no wonder I kept craving these. I found that eating half the bar was perfect for my needs, and worked wonderfully for a late-night snack.

Other great flavors we tested included Chocolate, Smore’s and one that had the office raving the Chocolate Peanut Butter. Clif Bar Builder bars are available at your local grocery stores or online.
