Running is one of the best times during any day, week or month for me. I get out on a treadmill or trail pretty often, and one of my favorite parts about the actual run is the vast improvement I can feel in my cardiovascular system. I LOVE how deep my breath gets and that it permeates my entire body, sending a flood of nutrients into every cell, and my spirit.
Many people today have a weight loss goal, or an idyllic physique they would like to achieve. I too have an ideal weight I like to maintain but I see exercise not only as a means to an end, but a journey. I want to enjoy every step, stumble and breath of it. I don’t want to obsess over how many calories my cardio workout just burned or how many miles I clocked on my pedometer. I just want to love my run.
Running is the highest-quality “me” time you can get. Here are just 5 reasons to run BESIDES weight loss:
1.Running Benefits, Fun Run Anyone?
A hostile trainer barking at you isn’t everybody’s idea of a fun. And nobody wants to do a treacherous workout. So skip all of that and opt for a run instead! There are so many different ways to run that everybody can work it into their healthy lifestyle. Choose to run in the grass without your shoes on, on the beach, to the mailbox, from your car to the grocery store door… whatever! Everyone is welcome to run around. Choose any cadence, any outfit, any terrain and just go for it!
We won’t judge!
2. Exercises for Depression
Running isn’t’ just fun because it allows you to express yourself without holding back or fitting into the proverbial “box.” It actually has been scientifically proven to increase hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain associated with a happy mood and good mental outlook. These include endorphins and cannabinoids that are naturally found in the brain, and are released by the pituitary gland offering many different benefits besides a good mood including lasting energy, lower stress levels and an ultimate “runner’s high.”
3. One of the Best Core Exercises
This may sound trivial, but don’t underestimate the ability of running to improve your core strength. And better yet – don’t underestimate the value of a strong core. If you don’t like crunches, you’re not alone… Did you know that running for even 15+ minutes a session can help to increase critical muscle mass in your abdominals? Benefits of core strength may help reduce your risk of sprains, strains and other injuries and improve your ability to balance.
4. Running Playlists
I can never get enough time to actually LISTEN to music. I use my running time to catch up on Spotify and other choice musical cuts I’ve come across. You should too! Music is a powerful motivational tool to amp up the intensity of your run but it also provides other benefits, including a reduced risk of injury. Check out AudioStep on iTunes, and find out how running to specific songs can work for you!
5. It’s Different. Not everyone is a runner
That’s what I used to think until I became a runner. It’s strange because I always wanted to run, but I was afraid of what a runner was supposed to look like. So for years, I didn’t even try it. Until one day, for reasons I can’t really pinpoint I finally just DID IT. If you were looking for a reason to start running, try it simply because it’s different. The running community welcomes everyone. Why not, pick a pair of really great running shoes, lace up and try it?! It’s always a new adventure.
You don’t have to be a runner to run. And you don’t have to have a weight loss goal either! There are millions of reasons to run without all that rubbish. These were only five.
