As summer draws near, it’s time to start thinking about music festivals around the country. There are plenty to consider, but we here at Mountain Weekly have put in the footwork for you, scrutinized the scene and determined, for you, which ones rank in the absolutely must attend category. These are listed in no particular order because the variety of genre is broad enough to cover all tastes; different strokes for different folks’ and all that.
The Electric Forest Music Festival in Rothbury, Michigan with too many bands to list is the perfect fit for the woodsy audiophile. It spans two weeks, June 22 through July 2, in one of the most beautiful wooded parks in Michigan. The electronic and bluesy sounds, coupled with the magical ambience is a psychedelic journey down the rabbit hole; no drugs required, but that’s entirely up to you! With the night forest bathed in giant swaths of rainbow lit trees and blood pumping, heart thumping bass, you may start to feel…otherworldly. If you are looking for an extended camping trip in a spectacular locale with great entertainment, than make this your summer vacation.
Turn your sights to the northwest for a brilliant bash where the music is great and the atmosphere is funky, What The Festival 2017, at Wolf Run Ranch Oregon. This event melds visual art and eargasmic music in the open air presenting a setting for pure sensory immersion from June 15-19. A festival that really spotlights local music, allowing the natives to engage in a more familiar way with the musicians, while at the same time allowing artists to showcase their skills to whole new audiences. With beautiful scenery and historically great weather, this is the way to enjoy a summer weekend.
The California Roots Festival is three day extravaganza boasting over 45 of the best reggae acts, and a few outstanding rappers. They got superstars like The Dirty Heads, Matisyahu, and Rebelution. The one and only NAS will grace the stage as will super hip hop old schoolers Jurassic 5, and the true original king of the dancehall, Yellowman is performing! Holding the festival from May 26-28, in beautiful Monterrey, California should afford milder weather than the festivals held in the heart of summer.
LOCKN’ is the classic outdoor music festival with tour junkie bands like Widespread Panic and The String Cheese Incident. With more than 30 jam bands descending on Arrington Virginia for the four day event beginning August 24. It is a wonderful way to cap the summer and transition into autumn. It should satisfy the most ardent progressive bluegrass lovers.
The 2017 Pitchfork Music Festival from July 14-16 at Union Park in Chicago is a much more pop chart heavy event. Showing off a generous variety of music genres from hip hop to alt-rock and electronic to hardcore punk, this is kind of the everybody fest. Some of headliners thus far announced are LCD Soundsystem, A Tribe Called Quest, and Solange.
The mother of all summer music fests is, of course, the aptly titled Summerfest 2017 which will present more than 800 acts across an 11 day span in Milwaukee Wisconsin. With such a plethora of bands there is bound to be something for music fans of every shape and size! Just a few of the artists lined up for this beast includes The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Awolnation, BJ The Chicago Kid, Ziggy Marley, and Fishbone!
