BROOMFIELD, CO – The Fourmile Benefit Concert was held at the 1STBANK Center to raise funds for the devastating fire that ripped through the foothills of Boulder on labor day weekend. Featuring local Colorado jambands The String Cheese Incident, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon and last but not least the members of Phish all combined for an incredible night of music.
Over $20,000 was raised at the concert via text messaging, a new way to generate funds! And over $300,000 was generated in ticket sales, donations and sales of benefit related items. It was wonderful to see the local music scene show so much support. Fans traveled from across the country to be apart of what will undoubtedly go down as one of the most memorable nights in Colorado music history.
Leftover Salmon opened the show and could have easily been the closer, anytime you have those guys playing their slam grass poly ethic Cajun bluegrass music your sure to get the crowd pumped. Leftover brought out their good friend Bill Nershi from The String Cheese Incident (SCI) along with Page McConnell from Phish, Scramble Campell as the hamburgular and a gal I didn’t know. This was all to start the event around 6:00pm.
Next up was Yonder Mountain String Band sticking with the bluegrass theme. Lead singer and mandolin player Jeff Austin announced John Fishman from the band Phish would be joining them and mentioned how “it was great to be able to play with your heroes”. Then mentioned “this guy did a couple tours with us before he went back to his college band, I guess he’s doing alright” the college band he was referring to was Phish.
Big Head Todd and the Monster followed and got the crowd rocking and dancing in no time. The lights combined with the crowd energy and Todd’s screaming guitar were a nice fit. Todd was joined by members of Leftover Salmon for a cover of Friend of the Devil Hit after hit was played with the same enthusiasm they were in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Big Head Todd and the Monsters were sure to have gained some new fans with their performance.
Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon went next and played Phish tunes acoustically. This was a nice an very rare treat for the crowd who by this point had seen 4 hours of music. Songs like Possum, Wilson and Waste were busted out and the crowd went nuts! What a tease for the 3 nights of Phish to come. Mike and Trey proved just how amazing they are as musicians holding the crowd on every note.
Last but not least was The String Cheese Incident, joined by none other then Trey!! I’m sure many more guest came out by I had to get home and get some sleep. An amazing night, great music, lots and lots of fun!!
