Audio-Technica AT2005USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR Microphone Review

Audio-Technica AT2005USB in the field

Looking for high quality, yet affordable, microphone? Then the Audio-Technica AT2005USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR Microphone might just be for you.

The all-purpose microphone from Audio-Technica performs perfectly in all situations and settings, from the studio to the stage to outings in the field. In fact, it’s what we’ve been using at tradeshows and for all our video voiceovers over the course of the past year.

Audio-Technica AT2005USB Review

The Audio-Technica AT2005USB Microphone packs a lot of features into a small and affordable package. Yet it doesn’t overdo it. The microphone comes with only those settings and features that you need. There are no gimmicks.

Let’s start with the basics. The microphone is handheld with USB digital output and XLR analog output. The USB output allows you to connect the microphone to your computer for digital recording while the XLR output allows you to connect to a conventional input on a conventional sound system for live performance.

Because the AT2005USB is a dynamic microphone, it doesn’t pick up much background noise like condenser microphones are apt to do. On top of this, the extended frequency response makes for smooth podcasting, home studio recording, field recording, voiceovers, and even on-stage use.

A built-in headphone jack on the AT2005USB allows you to monitor audio directly from your microphone. Another nice feature worth noting is the headphone volume via controls on the bottom of the microphone itself.

As we mentioned above, we’ve been using the Audio-Technica AT2005USB Cardioid Dynamic USB Microphone almost exclusively over the course of the past year. On top of performing very well, the microphone looks professional and helps us stand out from the pack.

Overall Impression

We have no real complaints about this microphone. Of course, you do get what you pay for. And while the quality on this microphone is way more than enough for most users, it can’t match that of microphones two or three times the price. But this really is a nitpicky thing to get down on as the microphone’s sound quality is far above that of competitors in the same price range.

At the end of the day, we’d recommend the Audio-Technica AT2005USB Cardioid Dynamic USB Microphone ($89.00) to just about anyone. If you’re looking to use yours in situations similar to us (live interviews, voiceovers, etc), then it’s bound to meet and exceed your expectations.
