Gregory Cairn 58 Backpack Review

Gregory Carins

My boyfriend and I had the good fortune of backpacking around Indonesia for three months this spring. When preparing for our trip, choosing packs was one of the most important decisions we made. The Gregory Cairn 58 was the perfect pack for us. The packs were comfortable, extremely functional, durable and lightweight.

All details seem to have been considered in the construction of this pack. Everything was high quality, from the fabric to the waterproof zippers and sealed seams.

Gregory Cairn 58 Review

The Gregory Cairn Series uses trademarked Response LT Suspension. The packs contoured nicely to our bodies and were very comfortable.

We loved the waist belts, which were ventilated and contained an auto-fit feature, allowing for quick, easy and secure tightening.

  1. The packs were very lightweight and durable due to use of great fabric (420D and 100D Robic fabric).
  2. The Gregory Cairn pack had a multitude of organizational pockets that were key to managing our gear.

First, in addition to the main compartment, there were two smaller (but very functional) storage compartments on the front of the pack. (The first compartment is zippered and contains two smaller mesh organizational compartments within. The second pocket on the front of the pack is not zippered but closes when the main compartment is buckled.)

There was also a stash pocket on the underside of the top lid, two twin oversized pockets on the side of the pack, dual waist belt pockets, and a secret, hidden pocket beneath the side pocket on the right side of the pack. This secret pocket took a while to find, but once found, was great for storing our passports and extra money.

The Gregory Cairn pack also came with an integrated rain cover, which we greatly appreciated during downpours and boat taxi rides. Although we didn’t use it, we did notice that the shoulder strap on the right side of the pack allowed for a hydration tube as well.

Overall Impression

My boyfriend and I were extremely pleased with our Gregory Cairn 58 Backpack ($219.99). We knew that the pack we choose could make or break our trip and therefore were glad we were satisfied.

Happy Packing!

  1. Nice! Sounds like the backpack is worth its price! So how about a wallet for backpacking? Any ideas?
