The Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket will be one of the lightest, most functional pieces of outerwear in your mountain adventure kit. What sets this amazing Patagonia piece apart from past Micro Puff’s is the use of featherlight PlumaFill synthetic.
Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket Review
The Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket offers the warmth comfort and coziness of down meets the water-resistance of synthetic insulation for the perfect mountain attire. Toss in a nylon ripstop shell material known as Pertex Quantum® and the Patagonia Micro Puff Hoody becomes a bomber piece of gear that can block wind, water and just about any weather the mountains plan to throw your way.
Along with protecting you from the elements this jacket just seems to feel and fit right. At 5’11 I went with a Medium in the Patagonia Micro Puff Hoody, see photos below:
I was able to layer while using the Patagonia Micro Puff Hoody as well without noticing much-added bulk under the garment. When using the Micro Puff under a shell the Pertex Quantum® material allows your arms to easily slide in and out of a jacket without any friction.
The elastic cuffs keep the weather out while at the same time moves freely with your arm. Gloves can be put under or over the cuffs. The bottom of the Micro Puff also utilizes this same elastic material. Regardless of what direction or movement you do, the Patagonia Micro Puff Hoddy will follow along with ease.
One of the great things about this piece is the warmth to weight ratio. The photo above was taken on a day that was hovering right around 32°F. Notice the baffle waffling that extends the full width of the back.
When the temperatures warmed a bit the DWR finish allowed the light rainwater to bounce right off the jacket and in some cases literally bead down the sleeves.
The only thing I would change about this jacket would be to add an external stuff sack to put the jacket in when packed down in your pack. This can easily be done with one of the 3 or 4 stuff sacks you most likely have sitting in your gear closet. The Pertex Quantum material is amazing, however, it’s not hardshell so keep this in mind when stuffing the Micro Puff Hoody into your pack or when you’re walking through thick brush.
The Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket ($299) is a great 3 season addition to your outerwear collection. Most likely after a few days of wearing the Micro Puff, feeling the PlumaFill insulation and silky feel of Pertex Quantum® it will be hard to pick anything else to put on when you walk out the front door.
