The Patagonia Untracked Jacket offers a 3 Layer GORE-TEX fabric that breathes so well that after several hours of fast skinning in a fairly warm storm, I didn’t even need to open the pit zips. The first thing I noticed about the Patagonia Untracked Jacket is that it has everything you need and nothing you don’t. I used this jacket while guiding clients and freeriding around the Tetons. 3 Layer GORE-TEX

As you would expect from Patagonia’s high-end products, the Patagonia Untracked Jacket is next level in comfort, waterproofing, and breathability. All the zippers are seam-sealed and super waterproof. I also like the minimalist adjustable powder skirt. When not in use I didn’t notice it at all, and when I snapped the single button into place it did its job- it kept snow and wind out.

When the uptrack got steep and arduous the huge pit zips vented exceptionally well. Both the breathability and venting are huge in the backcountry in a winter environment because you want to move fast and efficiently and sweat minimally.

Patagonia Jacket Fit

Traditional GORE-TEX can be stiff and crunchy. The Untracked Jacket somehow seems softer and quieter without sacrificing any sort of water-repelling capabilities even with it being a 3-Layer GORE-TEX . Patagonia calls the fit ‘highly articulated’, which basically means the arms are shaped to how you would be naturally positioned when skiing or boarding. Pretty cool. I’m 5’9’’ and 165 and got the coat in medium, which fits fine for a general shell/climbing jacket, but I’d personally go up a size for layering and to be less restrictive when riding vs wearing it around town in a regular fit.

Overall Impression

I tested out the Patagonia Untracked Jacket in the Tetons and then on a week-long heli/hut trip in the Monashess in British Columbia during a heavy storm cycle. The conditions went from thigh deep on day one to beyond bottomless and never really stopped. It was storm riding at its deepest and a pretty good spot to test a piece of outerwear. I brought other layers and shells and ended up using this coat every day. Perfect temperature regulation, light, and comfortable fit, and totally waterproof.
