ALMONT, CO – Less then 20 miles from Crested Butte lies a world class fly fishing destination which is also home to incredible bouldering located just off Hwy 135 across the Gunnison river.
The sport of Bouldering is essentially rock climbing without ropes. At first this may sound nuts however the routes are much shorter while at the same providing more of a mental and sometimes physical challenge then traditional rock climbing can offer. What better way to spend mother’s day. 🙂
While bouldering I look at rock faces that I would not think twice about going up with the assistance of ropes and question if I can make it up, or more important not fall to the ground. When you know there is no safety net (we had a crash pad on the ground in the event of a fall) you look at climbing in different light. You learn to not cheat and rely on the rope, instead depending on your own strength to get to the top.
Apparently all the routes we climbed today have been rated and listed in local bouldering books. I’m excited to have found a community full of local athletes that like playing outside.
