When reviewing any backpack there are many factors to consider such as comfort, durability, capacity and organization. Added factors need to be considered in order to make the right decision about a backcountry specific bag. So does the Dakine Poacher 40L Backpack check all the boxes? Find out in my review below.

The Dakine Poacher 40L backpack has features designed to cater to the needs of both backcountry skiers and snowboarders. We’re all on the same team and Dakine didn’t discriminate when designing this bag. The integrated rescue whistle on the sternum strap, snow tool & shovel pocket and ice axe / splitboard pole carry loops provide quick access to those items that are necessary to get to without having to empty anything else in your bag.

A-Frame Ski Carry

The diagonal and A-frame ski carry options or vertical and horizontal snowboard carry options make it easy to arrange whatever setup you have on your back, in any way that is most comfortable and unique to you and your ascent / descent. The straps used for the carry systems are catered to wide equipment so no need to worry if your skis or board will fit. Insulated sleeves on both sides of the backpack straps keep snow off your radio and hydration system and are padded for a relaxed fit on the shoulders. The wrapping molded back panel and padded, reverse pull waist belt are easily adjustable and provide max comfort so you can go the distance with the support you need on the long hauls.

40L Capacity for Longer Tours

For a larger touring pack, this is by far the way to go. A 40L capacity means ample space for the gear and equipment needed for multi day missions or some extra space for the layers that inevitably get stripped when going the distance. However, the high volume maintains a low profile and easily cinches down to a compressed sleek look.

Organization and efficiency are extremely important to me, especially in the backcountry. The 8 pockets built into the poacher have a place to store everything you need. My personal favorites are the hipbelt pocket and the oversized fleece lined goggle pocket. The two other pockets that accompany the google pocket in the brain hold the tools, ski traps, snacks and head lamp separate from my googles keeping them scratch free. A zippered back panel providing main access inside the backpack is necessary in a touring bag and the zipper on the poacher is extremely easy to open and close.

Specs:

  • Dakine Poacher Backpack Weight (40L version): 3.85 lbs.
  • Dimensions: 25 x 12 x 8 in
  • Best Uses: Backcountry Skiing / Backcountry Snowboarding / Touring

Helmet Carrying System

My previous backpack was lacking a helmet carrying system but the Poacher has it all with its deployable helmet carry with dual position options. I honestly can’t think of a feature they missed on this Dakine Backpack that would make backcountry travel easier other than maybe another hip pocket.

Dakine Poacher 40L Backpack Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Integrated rescue whistle on sternum strap
  • A-Frame ski carry for easy arrangement
  • 40L capacity for longer tours

Cons:

  • Lacks additional hip pocket for storage
  • May be too large for smaller frames

Although the Dakine Poacher 40L Backpack ($240.00) is a men’s style backpack, I’m really excited about having a bag that can fit everything I need for more than a few hours in the backcountry. Being a backcountry ambassador on Teton Pass, we are expected to have additional gear such as a med kit and some extra warm water with us to give to someone in need.  I’m wearing a men’s small and I was afraid it was going to be too big for me but after packing it with all my essentials and feeling how comfortable the fit is, it’s my new favorite bag.

Hi there. Does this bag have a spot for a hydration bladder?

      Kelly,

Indeed it’s Hydration compatible with a sleeve against the back.
