The Mooncool CG2 Road Cruiser is awesome. Super sturdy, great battery range, amazing coasting, and awesome downhill recharging! Mooncool’s new CG2 Road Cruiser is a sleek step-through e-bike that reflects the company’s commitment to “enable everyone to have a free and healthy lifestyle.” We’d love to see the battery range and downhill recharging features on the CG2 rolled out across all e-bikes. The CG2 retails for $2,199, but is currently on sale for $1,799 which is in line with pricing on fellow high-quality bikes from Aventon or Rad Power. Until July 8th Mooncool has a screaming good 4th of July Sale where if you purchase a CG2 you get a chain lock, helmet, and cargo baskest for free ($260 value). Just another reason to buy a Mooncool today!

Frame

The bike’s step-through-esque frame makes hopping on and off for errands effortless. The frame can carry an industry-leading 450 pounds. The bike feels super rugged. The quick-release seat post makes it easy to share the bike with friends as well as do on-the-fly changes. If you’re worried about the lack of suspension, no need! The comfy seat and wide tires provide great comfort. Together, these features do a decent job absorbing vibrations from bumpy roads and grassy paths.

We really appreciate the dual-leg kickstand. It’s easy to deploy and the bike seems super stable on the kickstand.

Motor and Battery

The battery  is located right behind the seatpost while the brushless motor is hidden in the rear hub. The 750W brushless hub motor is beefier than most bike motors and provides a ton of oomph. The bike allegedly weighs 97 pounds, but it manuevers super well and easily achieves its top speed of 20 mph. You can take advantage of the motor via the throttle (located on the right side) or five pedal assist levels (one being the least assist and five being the most assist). We were super happy with the peppiness of the pedal assist. We were also stoked with how the motor seems to quickly stop when you stop pedaling as opposed to laggingly staying on like on some of the other bikes we’ve tested. We’d love to see if the Mooncool team could get the bike to safely operate at 25 mph. Most of the streets in our town are 25 mph roads and it would be nice to be able to keep up with the flow of traffic rather than being relegated to sometimes clogged bike paths.

The 48V, 20Ah removable battery’s position behind the seat post adds to the bike’s overall stability by aligning batter weight with rider weight. The bike was a joy when cornering. When pedaling, the battery provides up to 60-75 miles of range. We fully trust this range. While the bike doesn’t appear to claim to have recharging capabilities, we had awesome experience with the “recharging” capabilities of this bike. We were able to regain 30% of the battery on a large downhill. It wasn’t clear whether this was a hidden feature or a software glitch. As for formally charging the bike, the battery charges in 10 hours using a standard wall outlet.

Components

Mooncool does a great job sourcing good components. The Shimano 7-speed shifting worked great when paired with the Shimano MFTZ510 7-Speed 14-34T freewheel. The drivetrain felt super solid and the chain never got dropped.

On the there of quality components, the CG2 uses hydraulic disc brakes. The Star Union hydraulic brakes performed perfectly during our tests, but we do worry about having to take the bike into a bike shop if there ever were an issue. Mechanical brakes are easier to service, but folks worry about their stopping power. Certainly a tradeoff.

The bike tech doesn’t stop at the battery and motor. The brake lights and turn signals are super helpful. We’d love to see turn signals rolled out across the industry to allow folks to signal their turning intentions without having to take their hands off the handlebars. The LED display on the left side of the handlebars shows speed and battery level.
