Spontaneous bike adventures or epic, planned expeditions often rely on having a bike rack on your car, but a poor-quality setup and stop you in your tracks. Dreading the moment of lifting a large or heavy bike onto the rack can irritate the trip— the RadGnaRack has a few tricks up its sleeve to make transporting heavy mountain bikes and e-Bikes a breeze. Here’s my comprehensive review of this unique hitch bike rack.

What is the RadGnaRack?

The RadGnaRack is a hitch-mounted bike rack that can support heavy bikes and electric bikes. The innovative crank holder mechanism is different from most other racks— the bike is secured via one of its crank arms that fits into a sturdy slot on the rack. The ramp feature and crank holder make it especially easy to load heavy bikes onto the rack.

The rack’s name is a creative take on the Norse myth of Ragnarök. It’s still the stuff of legend on why exactly the company’s founders decided on that name, but it does give off a rugged vibe to match the heavy-duty product. Ragnarök alluded to a series of catastrophic events at the end of the world, including a huge battle. In this case, instead of battling with your bike to mount it on your rack, you can enjoy the user-friendly design of the new RadGnaRack— disaster successfully avoided.

RadGnaRack: Made in the USA

Rad Gnar Products, the brand behind this hitch rack, was founded in 2022 by Don Serra and Tyson Creager. The engineers behind the RadGnaRack have motorcycle and e-Bike backgrounds, leveraging their expertise to build heavy-duty and durable bike racks suitable for all types of bicycles.

The company is based in Utah and does all of the design, fabrication, and assembly in the US. That dedication to domestic manufacturing and sourcing happens less and less in the e-Bike world, so it’s an exciting advantage. And since they control production, the brand is also able to customize your chosen rack if you have specific colors in mind. This double rack is actually the second bike rack I’ve tested from Rad Gnar Products.

Rack Features & Benefits

The RadGnaRack is available in a few different versions depending on the setup that works with your vehicle and the number of bikes you’re transporting. We tested the “High Modular Long Attachment Bar + Double All Bike”, for example. All models mount to a 2” hitch receiver, but you can opt for high or low clearance, short or long attachment bar, and one or two bike wells.

Loading Bikes Up and Down

It may not look like a typical hitch rack, and here’s why. One side of the rack can be lowered to act as a ramp, facilitating rolling the bike onto the ramp and loading the crank into the holder. Some other racks feature an auxiliary ramp or extension, but this rack incorporates it into the wheel well. The front wheel is easily secured with a retention strap— essentially, a Voile ski strap. The only downside is that the rack doesn’t fold up when not loaded with any bikes. This helps save space and can make parking easier, but the company says it’s already working on a solution.

Patented Crank Holder

The secret sauce of the RadGnaRack is the patented crank holder that supports and secures the bike. One crank arm slides into the holder, propping up the entire bike. The company explains that the cranks and bottom bracket are some of the strongest parts of the bike— after all, all the pedal power goes through there— and can safely support the bike during transit. I was initially worried about additional strain on the cranks, but the solid construction and lack of wobble convinced me.

The crank holder is particularly useful for handling heavier bikes and e-Bikes and loading them onto the rack. Traditional racks typically require the user to deadlift the bike high enough to hang on a conventional hitch-mounted or trunk-mounted rack. And roof racks are essentially a no-go for hefty electric bikes anyway. The RadGnaRack stays close to the ground and limits any lifting of the bike.

You’ll have to choose the correct crank holder for your bike. The RadGnaRack comes as a Traditional style or Mountain Bike style that’s compatible with popular mountain bike cranks, including SRAM cranks.

Maximum Payload Limit

Another area where the RadGnaRack shines is its impressive weight capacity. The single bike version supports up to 120 lbs, and the double bike model can carry up to 240 lbs. I don’t know of any standard e-Bikes that surpass that weight limit, so you can transport your hefty bike without a problem. This solves the main issue for e-Bike riders with heavy bikes, and even reduces the required effort during the loading process.

That high payload capacity means that the rack itself is also quite heavy, so it’s best if the rack stays on the vehicle. The double bike model I tested is especially heavy and would be quite a task to take on and off every time you go out for a ride. It’s a hitch rack anyway, so it’s not designed to be as temporary as a trunk rack or roof rack.

Who is the RadGnaRack For?

Man Loading E-Bike

The RadGnaRack is a great option for riders with heavy mountain bikes and e-Bikes looking for an easy-loading solution. The unique crank holder, customizable options, and integrated ramp show the zenith of hitch rack design, though the rack costs considerably more than comparable options on the market. But if your bike is near or topping the 80+ lbs. mark, this heavy-duty rack excels where other racks can’t handle the weight.

RadGnaRack E-Bike Rack Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Easier loading process with a ramp
  • High weight limit for heavy e-Bikes
  • Customizable design and colors
  • Made in the USA with high-quality materials

Cons:

  • Custom orders may take longer
  • Doesn’t fold up when not loaded
  • More expensive than comparable hitch racks

As strong as Thor’s hammer, the RadGnaRack is a well-engineered solution tailored specifically for riders with heavy e-Bikes and mountain bikes. Its standout crank holder system and built-in ramp significantly reduce the strain of loading and unloading, making spontaneous adventures and long-distance hauls far more enjoyable. If you’re tired of wrestling your bike onto inferior racks, the RadGnaRack delivers the muscle and innovation to match even your burliest rides.
