Google Wants to Destroy the Mountain Weekly News & Kill Small Publishers Across the Globe In Favor of Large Media Corporations

Google has decided to remove and hide most of the Mountain Weekly News content. This started during the September 2023 algorithm update.  So if you’re wondering what happened to us, we’re still here and creating incredible, beautiful and helpful product reviews and the type of content you have grown accustomed to from this website.

However it may be hard to find our articles now, and here’s why.

Every Major News Outlet Is Now Talking About Outdoor Gear

Affiliate Swarming

Brands like Good Housekeeping, CNN, Forbes and even People Magazine are now going after the outdoors, specifically affiliate marketing dollars. This is how the Mountain Weekly News was able to survive over all these years: By earning small commissions, usually between 2-10% of any sales made from the links on our site.

However, the big media outlets are now writing article on Best Snowboards, Best Hiking Boots, Best E-Bikes etc. etc. And what’s worse is Google with the new update is ranking these large sites at the top of Google. Sites like mine have all but disappeared.

Perhaps people are more interested in what sites like USA Today have to say about what snowboard to buy for the season vs., I don’t know, an actual content site like mine. Run by someone that lives to snowboard among other things.

Here is the USA Today article on Best Snowboards https://reviewed.usatoday.com/lifestyle/best-right-now/best-snowboards

How are you to know or trust a brand like USA Today for snowboard reviews, or Good Housekeeping?  Are they actually snowboarders or simply writing articles to make money without ever testing any products on snow?

Google Update HCU Traffic Drop

Google HCU Update
Google HCU Update Rolled out in September of 2023

As you can see from the chart above the Mountain Weekly News had around 30,000-40,000 visitors a day from Google alone through 2023. That however changed to 368 visitors from Google as of yesterday. (4/4/23).

Is Monetizing a Website Bad?

Perhaps Google didn’t like that I was monetizing the website?  With office rent, utilities, all the online tools, hosting, paying my photographers, paying my writers and paying for bikes to be built we have internal cost to run this website and this business.

This drop in traffic essentially eliminated our advertising dollars as well as our affiliate income. As a site owner this is making it really hard to keep the lights on.

Things worked well for years. The Mountain Weekly News had been growing year after year after year. I started this website in 2008. Our content continued to get better during that time but now Google has us in a weird spot. Here are some examples below to how our content is not showing up.

The Content in Search Results is Super Cluttered Now

I would like to show an example of how Google is essentially hiding my content and instead favoring retailers with the new Core Update. The first example is from a pair of splitboard skins we reviewed for Union.  The article is titled “Union Splitboard Skins Review”

So Lets head to Google and see what happens with that query with the new Google Core UPDATE

Google Core Update Results

Google Showing Reddit Over Content
Google Decided to Put the Reddit Post with My Article Link That I submitted to Reddit Ahead of the Actual Review?

As you can see above the first listing is Reddit. Which is ironic as I posted that link to Reddit in a forum about splitboarding and it leads to my actual review page.  One would think Google would be smart enough to know which review to show.

Google has taken the stance that Reddit is where people turn to for information, not a review site like the Mountain Weekly News.  You can learn more about why Google is favoring Reddit by this post from Google’s Search Liaison Danny Sullivan.

But where is the actual “Union Splitboard Skins Review” for the Mountain Weekly News in Google? Lets head back and take a look.

First up is Reddit, followed by a retailer, followed by the manufacture and so forth. None of which offer a review of the skins.

  1. Reddit – Link to Mountain Weekly News review
  2. Evo.com (retailer) – no product review
  3. Union Binding Company (manufacture) – no product review
  4. Curated (retailer) – showing different product all together, not the skins were searching for
  5. Field Mag – showing different product all together, not the skins were searching for
  6. thegoodride – showing different product all together, not the skins were searching for
  7. thehouse (retailer) – no product review
  8. Amazon – (retailer) no product review
  9. Mountain Weekly News – Actual review of the Union Splitboard Skins the query was in reference to.

In the past before Google started infinite scroll the 9th position would be at the very bottom of the first page.

If you head to Bing.com and do the same search, The Mountain Weekly News shows up at the top spot. So unlike the Google Helpful Content Update, Bing still sees me and my website as industry leaders in the outdoors.

Bing Search Results Better than Google
Are Bing’s Search Results Better than Google. The Answer is YES

Google has setout to remove 40% of web pages from Search. And they want to serve the best results, or did so in the past. Now it seems Google has pivoted to focusing on advertising dollars and strengthen partnership with retailers aka advertisers.

This same type of search can be repeated many times, where the Mountain Weekly News is the first or only person with the review yet Google refuses to show us at the top.

Word “Review” Being Removed from Search for Product Review Site

Where it gets worse is Google is now deciding to remove words from my site title. See example below for a pair of Gordini Ski Gloves we recently published a review on.

The article is titled – Gordini Snow Ranger Gloves Review

I like to keep things simple and to the point in the Titles. But look how Google is showing us:

Google Removed Word Review
Google Removed the Word Review from The Title

Now why on earth would Google remove the word REVIEW from the Title? It’s pretty much the most important part. We don’t sell gloves, nor do we want to be in competition with retailers.

Google vs Bing

As a website owner that has never used AI-generate content I’m puzzled as to why Google is devaluing my content and instead opting for a poor user experience on Google. Most people won’t keep scrolling to find what they want.

We suggest all our readers head to Bing.com if you value what search results your seeing or if you just miss seeing my content.  Or better yet perhaps you don’t appreciate Google manipulating search rankings while essentially putting content creators out of business.

The core ranking system is completely broken, whats worse is Google won’t actually tell me what I did wrong. Was it producing content at scale, talking about too many topics, monetizing my website? These are all things my competitors do online.

If Google’s main goal is to reduce low quality unoriginal content, they have totally missed the benchmark with my website.

I have routinely reached out to the Google Search team including John Mueller and Danny Sullivan. Both are not bothering to respond to my questions and concerns online whereas folks like Barry Schwartz, Glenn Gabe, and Lily Ray are willing to have discussions.

      Mark,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. We are starting to see traffic turn around after doing a major technical SEO audit of my website. Turns out after 15+ years code can get a little wonky. I would say keep posting in the Google forums and be sure to use Twitter as well. Starting to here from Danny and John over there which is start.

I think the way we used to do business as websites and online with Google has changed, and we can all adapt or go down in flames. I would much rather keep at it.

thanks Mike, your voice is the voice if many. as someone who founded the largest frequent flyer forum in tew world, the reason i started a blog network is because i paid attention to the signal/noise challenge of almost all forums, including reddit. the effort it takes to parse through a forum post to extract the actual information you are looking for is so much a challenge these days. blogs and review sites such as yours (and like mine: boardingarea.com) made it as publishers because of the authenticity of the readership and the focus on the written word. your points are so valid—we are all the original E-E-A-Ters. But hey, google did offer up a form to fill out if you thought your website was harmed from being helpful. that’s goolge being helpful i guess.

      Randy,

Appreciate you taking the time to comment and read my article. More so for explaining your similar experience. Clearly your site was seeing millions of users a month for good reasons, to drop that down the way it’s been done is not explainable.

I wonder if the whole E-E-A-T was a distraction. Seems the majority of sites or those talking publicly are what the definition of helpful content is.

      Round and round we go.

Having gone through this before with Google it took 18 months to get traffic back.

Google has been awful for years. I began de-Googling in 2009 because of how bad it was getting. Around 2012 it began biasing Google News results in favour of big corporations. Never mind if you broke the story—Big Media got the hits. Fast forward to today and we know that Google is intentionally showing crap results in order to keep people on search for longer—that much has come out in the DOJ case during discovery. I’m deeply sorry to read it has affected you, too. If only people would start waking up and stop using that godforsaken “search engine”.

At least your DOJ has cojones. Our equivalent has done nothing and I am seeing lots of smaller publications—even those with Big Media money—die here.

      Jack,

Thanks for taking the time to read my piece and share your examples dating back to 2009. The ecosystem for online publishing is continuing to favor the big guy. It’s like the opposite of how the www first started. There needs to be a place and outlet for people to blog, talk about their passions. And maybe those people end up monetizing their content. Nothing wrong with that. Or perhaps they decide to write about whatever is on their mind. Freedom of speech is a thing, or was until Google really took over.

De-Googling that’s the first I have heard the term. It’s really catchy you might be onto something here.

Google are there to make money pure and simple. If they think this is the best way to do that then niche sites are unfortunately dead in the water. Asking people to change to bing is not likely to happen at scale Google is synonymous with search and there would need to be a massive shift of people which is unlikely – although I suppose it has happened before – Yahoo and altavista. My little golf site has been similarly hit in terms of the percentage decline in traffic and while I wouldn’t quite put my site in your league I have played golf for 35 years unlike many of the writers of articles that do rank. I only reviewed things I had in my hand with a small number of exceptions but none of my experience, original photos and hard work count for anything as Google have handed affiliate and as income to the likes of Reddit, quora and Forbes. I have yet to come across any site that was whacked by HCU that has recovered.

      Geoffrey,

Thanks for taking the time to read my piece and comment. Agreed the Bing switch will be hard but it’s possible as it hasn’t always only been Google. I looked at your traffic and website and again can’t see what Google doesn’t like here. You’re website and your experience would be a great resource for people interesting in Golf, gear and courses and so much more.

What about doing guided tours to big gold events around the world? Would people pay to join you on golf vacations? Might be a fun product you can sell. I’m looking at doing the same for splitboarding and e-bikes. One thing Google might be wondering about is your store page is a pass-through to affiliate pages. I think Google wants to eliminate this. Is there a way to sell direct on your site? Even used Golf balls to start or something? I bet that would drive some sales and make Google happier, or maybe not. Total guess at this point.

Hello, I’m from Brazil. My website covers movie and TV series news. We manage to provide exclusive information because we develop software that can generate data nobody else has, but I won’t go into details.

What I mean to say is that our story is extremely similar. The traffic graph you shared looks just like ours. We had a daily pageview count that ranged from 20,000 to 100,000. This large variation was due to Discover. After September 2023, there was a steady decline. We had hoped the March 2024 update would help, but, as everyone knows, what was already terrible got even worse, and today we’re down to 1,000 pageviews per day, with numbers continuing to drop daily.

Those who have lived and are living through this know it well. We look at the graph and think: My God, today is worse than yesterday. It’s a very unpleasant feeling to repeat this thought for months, day after day. My wife mentioned to me that my mother, who lives far away and doesn’t understand anything about what I do on the internet, was worried because I seemed sad in photos from various events over the past few months.

Regarding the latest Google updates (HCU), here in Brazil we see a similar movement in my niche: Big sites dominating every search result.

But the story doesn’t stop there. At least in my niche, these same big sites are standing out by using others’ content, meaning plagiarism.

Interestingly enough, Google clearly started considering my content unhelpful. But all I need to do is publish an article, and some big site makes a summary of my post, and magic happens: the news becomes helpful! A few hours later, all I have to do is check Google Discover to see my summarized article appearing on another site, often even with the same image I created in Photoshop. If I search for the associated keywords, guess who’s at the top? Yes, the big sites that summarized in seconds an article that took me a long time to think about and write.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any tips to share with you. I’ve updated the theme, paid for a Semrush subscription to identify and address errors, removed all widgets, we have impeccable CWV statistics, removed the few affiliate links that were in about 50 posts (my site now has about 12,000 posts), had to let go of writers, migrate to a smaller and cheaper server, etc.

I’m writing just so you know that there are other people in the world facing the same difficulties, dealing with significant financial challenges to cover similar expenses.

    Wish you the best.

      RD,

Thanks for taking the time to write in. Letting go of staff and even removing pages is tough. I feel this is the ups and down of web publishing especially with a reliance or addiction to Google free search traffic. Weening off that can be tough for lots of us. I’m glad your using SEMrush lots of data in there. Are you also using ahrefs?

Seeing the larger sites summarize content is something I have noticed. It seems the larger the site, the higher the domain rank or authority score the more it is favored these days.

My goal is to get the organic traffic side of things up for winter. I can create the best content that Google will almost be forced to show. More videos, more photos and lss listicle best of list, which is hard as those drove the most income.

As a small, independent niche publisher since 2008 I can absolutely (unfortunately) relate to all you’ve shared here. Google has truly ruined the internet, and it seems that many of the major publishers have questionable ethics when it comes to their review and commerce content. It’s doing a disservice to small businesses and consumers alike.

      Jessica,

Where was this website when I got married, geez. You have created a really cool site for people in a exciting, yet stressful time of their lives. I honestly had no clue how much weddings could cost or what Bridezilla was all about 🙂

Back to Google. Yeah it’s unfortunate they seem to be playing favoritism these days. Nothing in life is fair, but looking at the traffic you had 2 years ago vs today from Google. Well that’s hard to see. So many of us did well when the Google traffic funnels were turned on. People wouldn’t have been coming to our websites if they were garbage. Even with all the SEO tricks in the world. People would either want to read a site or bounce quickly. There was once metrics in place that rewarded this. If people clicked your link from Google and spent lots of time and looked at lots of pages that was a good ranking factor. If the same person clicked your link to Google and was like get me out of here. The next time that results would in theory show lower in search.

Perhaps this will happen to the large box retailers and media sites dominating the top of search? Or maybe the general customer doesn’t care where they get their information from.

We still have the May 5th roll out 🙂 so I’m hopeful things get better. Are you also using Instagram and Pinterest to get customers?

Mike, I can only say that I understand you perfectly. In our case, for 10 years we have been a reference in the automotive world in the United States. Our website has gathered user opinions and has been a meeting point for car enthusiasts.

Now Google has decided that we are no longer “useful” and all the work of these years has gone down the drain. There are many people waiting for a rollback to be able to recover their businesses, but I am quite pessimistic and I do not believe this will happen.

I wish there was a change in user behavior and the market share that Google now holds would be distributed more among other search engines that are working better right now: Bing, DuckDuckGo… but I am also quite pessimistic about this.

      Joseph,

Thanks for taking the time to read my article and leave a comment with your experience too. I checked your website it’s great. I have a salvaged title vehicle I love and a 94 Ford Bronco that often ets parts from Junkyards. Your site looks really good. Something I would personally use. I also check SEMrush and saw how your traffic has been yanked. Not cool. Clearly at one point lots of people were interacting with your content. Now the same content sees no eyeballs? Same as my story above.

The only thing that stood out and this is a suggestions is the Auto Parts Store Page. I was like wow they have their own store and are processing payments and drop shipping, next level. Then I clicked and it took me to Amazon. So this page might be what Google is confused by, or even readers. If it’s not a store, maybe you could title it like you did for Popular Auto Parts instead. I would consider changing the url on that page as store could be the issue.

Have you looked at FB and advertising. It would be very targeted to people in your niche.

Appreciate you reaching out. Don’t give up yet!!

Yes! Bing provides more accurate results than Google.

I was shocked why Google was not showing results that I used to frequently visit. The results are new and frustrating on Google.

Two months ago, I switched to Bing. Here, I found most of the helpful pages that I missed on Google. Personally, I don’t enjoy reading pages published by Forbes or similar media platforms. I prefer information written in simpler language, often found on smaller publishers’ sites.

Although I’m not a blog or website owner, I believe what Google is doing is unfair. There should be fair competition and a level playing field for everyone.

      Jack,

Thanks for taking the time to comment on your experiences switching to Bing. I think if Google doesn’t figure a way to fix search or even the playing field the average person, non website owner, seo, affiliate will start to look for alternatives. It’s like voting, it’s powerful when you switch sides or pick a different team or in this case search engine. I believe the large sites are also using AI to pad the articles, which if they AI is turned on would be communicating in a language that again would favor the big sites, vs as you said more simpler language easy to read. Heck this site has been my blog for 20 years.

Same. Switched to Bing and tell everyone I know to avoid Google and use Bing, Duck Duck Go etc. Anything but Google.

Google has annihilated independent publishers while pushing sites like Times of India, Forbes, Reddit, and Quora to the top of every search result, just so they can make more money for themselves.

Problem is, either these sites publish short information that doesn’t answer the query, or it’s outdated, or its factually incorrect.

I run 2 sites, both decimated by the Google update last September, and slowly being whittled out of Google search results as every new week arrives. Meanwhile, my content is better than 90% of the content on the first 3 pages of Google results, but still nowhere to be found.

At this point, if you use Google, you’re supporting a company that has destroyed hundreds of thousands of independent websites and the incomes of the people who own them/work for them.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Wow I looked at your site it’s great and also saw the massive traffic drop. We could put our SEMrush charts atop each other and they would be identical…. Along with tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of other publishers.

I like your comment “Meanwhile, my content is better than 90% of the content on the first 3 pages of Google results, but still nowhere to be found.” this should be enough for you to keep on creating content, keep pushing through, Field of Dreams style. If you build it they will come. I also went through this in 2020 and lost 87% of my traffic then. It eventually recovered but it’s not overnight. I put my head down and worked harder, revenue aside. It’s like I’m back to the old days when I started this blog. No money just writing articles for fun, stuff I’m passionate about.

Keep at it, keep researching industry trends and know that you are not alone here. How are your articles ranking on Bing?

Hi, I’m Italian, and my site as well as those of my competitors have collapsed exactly like yours. The difference is that here in Italy there is no Reddit, Forbes or Quora, so what have they put above: authoritative newspapers, e-commerce blogs. etc. etc. In my opinion Google has decided to simply cut out the websites of small publishers, because even if the content is excellent they position something else in the rankings just to make you die. Between Discover and serche I was making 15/30K a day like you and now 500/600.

      Simone,

Thank you for taking the time to read my article and share your experience from Italy. It seems Googles is favoring the larger more authoritative newspaper, magazine type sites with the latest round up update. Even if the content is not the best, the authority of the site ends up ranking it higher than someone like yourself with a real nice in beauty.

May 5th update might fix this, but most likely just makes it worse. For now at least. You can recover it just takes time. I went though this in 2020 and got all my traffic back but it took a year plus of trying just about everything. Including deleted hundreds if not thousands of articles.

The only thing we can do at this point is plan for a business without Google, which is so hard. Based on their earnings release yesterday, they really have no incentive to give a crap about it. They will continue to print money no matter how much they screw us and break the open web.

      Jonathan,

Strength in numbers my friend. Appreciate you taking the time to read this piece and to leave a comment. It’s wild that as their core product Search is at an all time low, they are telling shareholders stock is at an all time high. This is far from sustainable. We are noticing anything we post on YouTube. 1 minute, 10 minutes, length aside it out ranks our actual articles. So were pivoting to make additional videos for each product review. Even the quick iPhones ones Google feels is more important than my long format reviews, with photos etc etc..

Your site looks great! And the traffic drop your seeing seems identical to soo many publishers. Like if someone was to overalay our charts and they would be identical. And scalable, I bet hundreds of thousands of us or more are grouped into this. I had a friend with a site that taught French, as helpful as it gets. Only to see his business essentially die, pat of the blame has to go on myself though for getting accustomed to the free Google traffic. Social, and YouTube will play a much bigger role inthe future.

Will agree with you on your last part especially, Mike.

I was lazy and relied on consistent Google traffic for 14 years, and should have pushed social media as well.

Hence why my main site’s X account says “Joined 2014” and we still have only around 200 followers 🙂

Didn’t do anything with it until this January. Should have done.

Already though, I’m seeing sizable traffic from X and Facebook (not Pinterest or Instagram, they’re both useless), so plan on spending money advertising on both next month.

Google is losing traffic share though, slowly and surely, as word gets out that their SERPs are now junk, and as people get frustrated having to spend 5 minutes on Google to find a good result they’ll get on Bing in 10 seconds.

It’s only slow, but it’s continuing month by month. Plus, Bing is miles ahead in AI search, and Google has dropped the ball on that, so that will help them too.

BTW, we’re also getting some traffic from AI search results, as Bing does a nice job of including links to the sites where they got their info from, and they seem to like mine for a whole bunch of queries 🙂

Good luck with your site, btw. Forgot to say!

          Michelle,

I’m so bad with social, we just joined Instagram last year.. So I feel you there. I’m working on my newsletter, it goes out once a week. The signup is sort of hidden in the sidebar so maybe a popup to get more subscribers? My podcast has a decent reach. FB we have lots of fans but are shadowbanned, nobody ever interacts with my content. I think I’m just really bad about posting a link to my latest review. Vs actual community engagement.

X seems like it will take off again, business people like it and great source for news and even searching for current topics.

Bing.com really has the potential to step up. I would bet their engineering team is paying close attention to what Google is doing like, DONT DO THAT!! Bing is fast, autocompletes and reminds me of Google in 2022 when things were good, like really good. I don’t know if we were lazy to like the Google traffic. If it’s not broke dont fix it. But now it’s broke and were all like shoot what now?

Excited to see what the future brings. There are enough passionate publishers out there that we can make this work. Even if my traffic drops I will reinvent my site, the wheel and how I interact or not with Google in the future. Switching to a new search engine when multiplied by hundreds of thousands or millions of users will be the action that makes Google fix this, or they let Bing take it’s slice of the pie back.

Although my website is nowhere near yours, I absolutely feel for you. I’m the only person running the website and was able to success with affiliate commissions. Reinvested everything for my website, bought tons of gear, took photos, made demo videos, wrote articles…etc

Now it’s all gone, Google keeps playing with SERP and just manipulating my site title, meta descriptions, removing my original images, review snippets….etc

I think we should all let our visitors switch to Bing and DuckDuckGo, I already uninstalled Chrome and using Edge with Bing. It’s way more fair over there.

      Osman,

Thanks for checking out my article and for taking the time to comment. I dig what you are offering on your website. Maybe the people at Google quality control aren’t musicians? Or the AI thinks it can now best direct someone to what the best piece of music gear is for them. This can’t end well for Google. Especially when Bing is working as it’s supposed to. Ala how Google worked a few years ago.

Stick with it. This too shall pass

That is really sad to see the efforts being wasted without any fault. After google reddit deal, this is happening to lots of small websites. I big surprise how the regulators have eye closed on such updates killing small businesses.

      Aine,

Thanks for the comment, I feel I need to start reaching out to regulators maybe even just on the State level. Like hey I have this business. or had and now there is a potential for it to all go away.

At the same time I need to figure new traffic sources outside of Google if I will survive long term.

Sorry to hear this is happening to you and your site, Mike.

I remain hopeful that we’ll at least see some kind of pullback from Reddit’s domination in the next few months 🙂

      Glen,

That’s a great take. I think the Linekdin share of voice is slowing down a bit. If Reddit moves to a forums tab it would solve some stuff for sure.

Thanks for posting this article and the reality of the sad state of affairs for Gear Review sites. Stories like this make me want to leave Google and their disregard for fair media in the search engine world. Hello Bing! Adios Google ;0)

      GVD,

Thank you for the comment and for your ongoing support of the site and for your friendship. You’re such an incredibly talented photographer and someone that has clearly seen how the changes in the industry have been going over the years. Excited to see what our next chapter brings.
