Arc’teryx Micon Backpack Designed for Backcountry Skiers
As a fan of Arc’teryx’s sleek yet functional designs I was excited to test out the Micon 32 Backpack. As an avid backcountry skier, I’ve tested loads of backcountry ski packs and generally know what works when performance matters. The Arc’teryx Micon Backpack was unfortunately an underwhelming test.
Arc’teryx Use of N210r HT Nylon

The Arc’teryx Micon 32 Backpack is constructed from N210r HT nylon which is both durable and well-constructed. The material and zippers are also waterproof to ensure your belongings stay dry during any weather and the occasional fall-into-stream mishap. Truly a great feature.
Design

The sleek design and beautiful color way, I opted for the lime, got me thinking the Micon Backcountry Backpack might be my favorite piece of backcountry ski gear for the season. The Arc’teryx Micon Pack includes two side zippers; one for the avalanche compartment and the other for the main compartment.
The roll top was a cool design choice that allows for additional space and waterproofing. The pack comes with tool attachment points, a gear loop and ice clipper slots which is great for more technical days in the backcountry.

I found equipping the avalanche compartment using the side zipper was rather clunky. Not a deal breaker but not the best design I’ve seen.
Your other option would be to access your gear via the top roll compartment which takes equally as long. I find neither option is very good and during long tours accessibility is a top priority. If I have to take off my gloves or mess with straps to get to my gear I’m simply buying a new touring bag.
I was surprised and disappointed by this failure. I’ve tested many other Arc’teryx products and have always been impressed at the functional and durable design of their products, yet for some reason this Arc’teryx backpack didn’t pass their usually high bar.
Pros & Cons

Pros:
- Strong N210r HT nylon for added durability in a touring packIf your skis are attached
Cons:
- In the standard A-frame position you can’t access the main compartment without adjusting the straps holding your skis.
- Upon very first use, the chest strap snapped on me. No excessive force, nothing… snap
Overall Impression

I have always been impressed by Arc’teryx’s products in terms of both functionality and build in the past, yet this backpack did not perform to the level I would expect from Arc’teryx. Overall, It’s hard to give good recommendation on the Arc’teryx Micon Backpack ($280.00). I found the design rather clunky and the build quality uncharacteristically weak (snapping a chest strap is lame, even in cold weather).
