At just under 2 pounds (31.5 oz to be exact), this pack is an excellent choice to bring along for backpacking and even fast packing trips.
I used this backpack as a day pack for backcountry skiing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and rock climbing in Idaho at the City of Rocks. While I had no problem with using it as a day pack for skiing, I would not normally recommend this backpack for day trips, at least not the 60L size. I am really looking forward to using it backpacking when the snow melts at higher elevations.
The Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight Backpack has features of comfort and convenience that I look for with its organization system and comfortable distribution of weight.
Pockets
This Outdoor Vitals Backpack features two mesh pockets complimented by the center double zipper, a unique feature that is handy for the ultra-organized. You can slightly see through the mesh compartments and be reminded of what items you may have stuffed in there. I also like that there are two pockets for better organization rather than one large pocket. The zipper that runs through the middle provides easy access to everything in the main compartment.
The zippered hip pockets are a great place for a phone, lip balm, keys, or other small items you want in a secure pocket or easy access to. Additionally, both the sides of the pack have 2 pockets each with cord that cinches to secure items. The bottom pocket on each side fits a water bottle perfectly and provides easy access to drink water without needing to take the pack off. You could also use it for a water bladder and run the hose through the back.
How Much Weight Can You Carry?
The base of the pack is extra durable. The straps are designed well to carry the weight comfortably. I did not pack too much weight in my use, but across the board, others recommend carrying no more than 30-35 lbs. max for the pack to carry comfortably. I have wide shoulders and the straps fit nicely and are well padded. I found this pack’s unique hip strap easier to adjust.
The hip belt is removable, but I do not think I would ever choose to remove it, even to save weight. The clips on the front of the straps are an easy access place for an inReach device or bear spray.

Overall Impressions
Overall, the Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight Backpack ($234.99) is very high quality, durable, and lightweight. I would absolutely use this pack to carry gear for backpacking adventures. It is water resistant, but if I were to take it out on a long backcountry trip, I would want to eliminate the risk of water leaking through. I would use a backpack cover as a solution for this. The 60 L size is perfect, and while it also comes in a 40 L, I would prefer the larger 60 for multi day backpacking use.
This upcoming July and August I will be going on a hiking and climbing trip in Europe and I have been searching for the perfect backpack to suit my needs for this trip. I will be attending a wedding, doing some work, hiking and climbing. I am also doing a number of via ferrata routes in the Dolomites. I need to pack light since all of my varied belongings will need to be carried on my back. I need a pack with great organization, durability, and functionality. I am thrilled that I found the Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight 60L, because this is the perfect lightweight pack that I will be bringing with me!
