Smith Payroll Bike Helmet With MIPS Review
I got to test out the Smith Payroll MIPS Helmet on the trails this summer and found it has an excellent balance of safety, comfort, and functionality. I was particularly drawn to this helmet because of the MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) integration. Protecting your brain is always a worthy investment.

Ventilation
With the help of the VaporFit System – think adjustable back dial – I was able to get a snug fit within seconds of taking the Payroll MIPS Helmet out of the box. The helmet was comfortable to wear from start to finish thanks to the 19 fixed vents and the AirEvac ventilation system. In addition to the great fit, these helmets have been designed to accommodate the Smith performance eyewear. I was wearing the Shift Split MAG Glasses while testing the helmet and almost forgot I had either on. A good pairing between eyewear and helmet makes all the difference.
For individual sizing I would highly recommend referring to the size chart on the website and measuring your head. Head size can largely be independent of height and stature.
Comfort and Fit

Aesthetically, I love the look and flow of the helmet although the colorway I got wasn’t my favorite. I went with Matte Trail Camo and would have preferred Matte Black. With the relatively low profile design and lightweight technology the helmet comes in at 14 oz (size M). The helmet is equipped Ionic+ antimicrobial lining offering sweat-activated odor control. Overall, Smith really paid attention to their design and features on the Payroll MIPS Helmet.
Safety Features
On the performance front, the Payroll MIPS Helmet excels. The MIPS technology reduces rotational forces caused by angled impacts to the head which can be critical to reducing brain injury. This wonderful blend of lightweight design yet ample impact protection for a bike helmet lends itself well to cross country, enduro and E-MTB use. Depending on how hard you ride, I would recommend a full face helmet for some enduro and downhill riding.
Pros:
- MIPS technology for added protection
- Comfortable, adjustable fit with an VaporFit system
- Great ventilation for cooling
- Lightweight design
- Sleek and stylish appearance
Cons:
- Slightly higher price point due to the MIPS inclusion
- Some riders may prefer full face protection
Verdict

The Smith Payroll MIPS Helmet ($120.00) is a fantastic investment for riders looking for top-tier protection without sacrificing comfort or aesthetics. Whether you’re sweating on the up or crushing the down, this helmet is a great choice.
