The Jones MTN Surf Recycled Shell Jacket has quickly become one of my favorite pieces for both resort shredding and backcountry touring. Its durable, eco-conscious construction, combined with practical features and a relaxed fit, make it a go-to jacket for any mountain enthusiast. Whether you’re riding the chairlift or venturing into the backcountry, this jacket checks all the boxes for performance, comfort, and sustainability.

The MTN Surf Jacket has a medium-length, relaxed fit that provides plenty of mobility for dynamic turns and high-intensity movement. I’m 5’9” with a medium build, and the size medium fits me perfectly—allowing for enough room to layer underneath without feeling too baggy. The relaxed fit is ideal for unrestricted movement, which is crucial when you’re out on the slopes or navigating through the backcountry.

One of the standout features for me is the helmet-compatible hood, which is fully adjustable to ensure it fits comfortably over my helmet without being too tight or bulky. The minimalist design feels streamlined yet functional, and the jacket’s longer cut provides ample coverage without compromising freedom of movement.

Material and Build Quality

The MTN Surf Jacket from Jones Snowboards boasts an impressive 100% recycled 20K waterproof and 20K breathable, 2-layer fabric, which offers excellent protection against the elements. What I love most is that the fabric is made without PFAS—a harmful class of chemicals often used in waterproofing treatments. Knowing that this jacket is made with sustainability in mind is a big win.

The jacket’s build quality feels solid, and I appreciate the 4-way stretch fabric that moves with me as I navigate through powder or hike up a trail. The outer shell is tough enough to withstand the rigors of winter sports, while the recycled polyester lining adds a bit of warmth without feeling overly bulky. It’s the perfect balance of performance and comfort for chilly mornings or colder days at the resort.

Features

A Variety of Features Make this One of the Better Snowboard Jackets We Have Seen in Years | Photo Sean Hathcock Mountain Weekly News

The MTN Surf Jacket is packed with thoughtful features that enhance both functionality and convenience:

  • Pit Zips for ventilation: These help regulate temperature and prevent overheating during intense activity, which I really appreciate on warmer days or after a long climb.
  • Adjustable waist with cord locks: Keeps snow and wind out, ensuring a snug fit that doesn’t bunch up.
  • Recycled YKK AquaGuard® zippers: These zippers are water-resistant and durable, plus they contribute to the jacket’s overall eco-friendly design.
  • Internal and external pockets: I love the well-placed forearm pass pocket, and the chest and hand pockets provide easy access to essentials like my phone, snacks, or a lift pass. This jacket also features large internal skin pouches.
  • Minimalist powder skirt: It’s not overly bulky but still provides adequate protection on deep days when you’re waist-deep in fresh snow.
  • RECCO-equipped: A nice touch for peace of mind in case of emergencies in avalanche-prone areas.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Eco-friendly materials that don’t compromise performance
  • Lightweight yet durable construction
  • High 20K waterproof and breathability rating for all-day protection
  • Adequate pockets and storage
  • RECCO-equipped for added safety in the backcountry

Cons:

  • A slightly bulkier design compared to more streamlined backcountry-specific shells may not be ideal for those looking for a super lightweight, packable option for minimalist tours.
  • The minimalist design may feel too sparse for those who prefer more tech features like extra pockets or a full powder skirt
