I’ve been on the hunt for a perfect pair of touring pants since I began touring and finally found them in the Ortovox Pizol Soft Shell Touring Pants. The Pizol pants are an excellent choice for backcountry enthusiasts seeking both performance and durability. Whether you’re tackling steep ascents or carving down powdery slopes, the Pizol pants hold up. I wore the Ortovox Pizol Pants out on a bluebird day in the North Cascades and they exceeded all my expectations.

The fit of the Pizol Pants from Ortovox is tailored for movement, with a classic athletic cut that offers maximum mobility. I wore them up Eldorado Peak, a fifty classic ski descent, which entails 7000 feet of climbing in four miles and  had no problem with the constant log hopping and booting. The pants are equipped with two side zippers and are designed with Ortovox’s MERINO NATRUEREC material, providing both warm and breathability—ideal for long tours with ample climbing. The waistband is easily adjustable, which ensures a secure and comfortable fit throughout the day.

The design is both sleek and functional. The pants come with strategically placed pockets, including a thigh pocket that’s perfect for a phone or other small items. The zippers on the side can also be opened to further improve ventilation. The lower legs are reinforced with integrated gaiters and Schoeller protection, preventing tears while using crampons or traveling through rough terrain.

While not fully waterproof, the Ortovox Pizol Soft Shell pants do an excellent job of resisting light snow and wind. The winds were ripping up on Eldorado’s signature knife edge ridge and I didn’t feel a thing. They perform best in dry, cold conditions but can handle a light dusting of snow without getting soaked.

Overall Impression

Overall, the Ortovox Pizol Soft Shell Ski Touring Pants ($350.00) are a high-quality, versatile choice for anyone into  backcountry skiing. With their excellent mobility, warmth, and breathability, they offer great performance for a range of conditions. Whether you’re out on a long expedition or a quick dawn patrol, these pants will keep you comfortable and protected, making them an investment worth considering.
