Outdoor Research Women’s Tungsten II Jacket Review
I tested the Outdoor Research Tungsten II Jacket in Neptune. It’s an insulated GORE-TEX piece, retailing for $499 USD. This jacket is constructed from Bluesign approved GORE-TEX and VerticalX Eco—OR’s high-loft synthetic insulation made up of 85% recycled materials. It’s a fully seam taped, water and wind proof layer. I’d recommend it as your daily driver for moderately cold resort laps, but it’s definitely a versatile addition to your closet. I tested this piece on a lap up Mt. Glory on Teton Pass, and storm skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.
Outdoor Research Tungsten II Jacket Fit

I’m 5’ 1”, have reasonably broad shoulders, but not a lot of hip action. I tested a small Tungsten II and found the fit quite comfortable. I think this jacket is roomy enough to add another piece under if it was super cold, long enough to cover my butt, and has a nice sleeve length. There are wrist gaskets in the sleeves, and a powder skirt with snaps for storage. I generally steer away from these features because I find them to be unnecessary material, but they’re there for ya if you do like’em!
Resort Tested

I threw on the Tungsten II for some side country laps at JHMR. It was a snowy February weekend and the jacket held up well to the moisture. The piece is a really nice length for sitting on lifts, and the insulated storm hood fits over the helmet for another layer of protection. There are two cozy fleece lined hip pockets, and an inner and outer chest pocket for storage. I do wish there was an arm pocket for your season pass or lift ticket.
The GORE-TEX outer layer kept me dry for sure, but the dryness of the recent snowfall probably helped too, I can’t say for sure how it would hold up in something wetter. I found the level of insulation to be comfortable, not too heavy, not too light. I do run warm, but again, the fit allows for an extra layer of insulation if you need.
How Does it Work for Ski Touring?

I also took the Tungsten II out for a Glory lap since the winds were gentle and the temps mild. I love the convenience of an insulated shell, especially when touring since I’m typically packing two to three layers to use in different combinations. The jacket is warm, but has sizable pit-zips for ventilation. It packs ok, and I wouldn’t hesitate to bring it for a quick pre or post work tour.
Overall Impression

I think everyone who skis or snowboards at a resort should own an insulated shell. They’re convenient and comfortable. The Outdoor Research Tungsten II Women’s Jacket ($499.99) is a solid option with nearly all the resort riding features I like in a jacket— minus the pass pocket and gasket free sleeves. The Tungsten II is also pretty reasonably priced, and I think the soft gray-green—Neptune—is a nice neutral.
