The Ultimate Winter Roof Rack Accessory: Kuat Switch 4 Review
First of all, let’s just say that before getting my hands on this Kuat Switch 4, my previous racks were driving me crazy with the constant whistle at top speeds—and let’s not even mention the fantastic collection of dead bugs and dirt. When it comes to traveling back and forth to the ski resort or backcountry spot, it’s never a good idea to put your wet and sharp ski gear inside your car. You don’t want to scratch up the interior and have that musty smell from moisture start building throughout the winter. The roof rack is always the way to go.
The “sandwich-style” or “clamshell” roof rack remains the gold standard for ease of use. This style is easy to open and close and fits almost every style of roof rack bars on the market. However, most models stay upright and cause extra drag, annoying whistles, and poor gas economy. The Kuat Switch 4 solves this because it actually folds down when not in use.
Effortless Rack Installation

The rack was a breeze to install and the tools necessary to do so were included in the box. You might just need a stool or ladder if you have a taller vehicle.
Universal Compatibility for Any Vehicle
One of the most frustrating aspects of roof hardware is proprietary mounting. This Kuat Switch 4 rack solves that with a universal mounting system. Whether you have factory-installed aerodynamic blades, square bars, or round crossbars, the heavy-duty clamps wrap securely around the rail. The “sandwich” grip itself uses high-grade, ultra-soft rubber ensuring that top sheets or sticker jobs on your skis and boards don’t get scratched while still being held firmly in place.
Another safer bet for transporting skis and boards without any road wear is to use a Cargo Box like the Rhino-Rack we tested.
Innovative Design and Aerodynamics

The standout feature of this rack is the way it folds down when not in use. Most models stay upright causing wind drag and sometimes annoying noise. This model allows the arms to fold down parallel to the roofline. By reducing the vertical surface area, you significantly cut down on wind noise. This can also add to better gas mileage. For those with taller cars, trucks, SUVs or vans, the folding mechanism provides lower clearance to help fit into standard garages without feeling like you’re going to scrape the door or ceiling. Coming in at 11 pounds it’s also very lightweight for something so strong.
Kuat Switch 4 Technical Specs
- 26″ wide outside
- 20.5″ wide inside
- 6″ tall when in use
- 2.75″ tall when folded down
Performance on the Road

Despite its lightweight construction, there is zero compromise on security. The oversized push-button release is easy to operate even with thick mittens on, and the locks will keep everything safe when you’re not around.
I would say the only downfall of this Kuat switch 4 model is it will only hold 2 snowboards. You can make the Switch 4 work if you ride alone or if you have a smaller car with less seating or perhaps young children with smaller skis. If you plan on filing the car with all your friends and their snowboards consider upgrading to the larger “Switch 6 model” .
Overall Impression: Is the Kuat Switch Worth It?

Kuat has been in business for almost 20 years, and their products really stand the test of time. If you are an avid snowboarder or skier, roof racks are just part of your life. Look around any ski town and you’ll see that almost every car has some version of a rack. Look around at the cars in a ski town and you’ll see that almost every car has some version of a roof rack.
So for only $250 for the Switch 4 or $300 for the Switch 6 it’s a great value for such a high end product.
