Mooncool TK Pro E-Trike Review

As bicycle and e-bike riders, sometimes we need an extra wheel. Tricycles or trikes are traditionally used for the “shoulder seasons” of life – for young children not yet able to master the balance required for two-wheeled motion, and for older folks whose balance has been compromised by physical decline of various types. Add in a powerful motor, and the Mooncool TK Pro – one of three e-trikes from Mooncool that we’ve reviewed – will allow mobility-impaired folks to again enjoy the mental and physical health benefits of moving outside in the fresh air. But with its built-in utility and versatility, the Mooncool TK Pro is a great option for adult riders of any age who want a lower-speed cruiser or grocery-getter.

The TK Pro is a Class 2 electric trike, with throttle-only max speed of 16 mph. The slower top speed means that the TK Pro can be ridden on shared-use recreational trails. Power assist is seamlessly integrated courtesy of a torque sensor, which measures the twisting force that the rider is putting into forward motion and amplifies it for a higher top end speed. We generally prefer torque sensors over cadence sensors, which measure pedal speed only, because the interface between pedal force and forward motion is more seamless and precise.

Power

The TK Pro comes with a 750W/48V brushless rear hub motor that adequately powers the neighborhood errands making it one of the best trikes for farmer’s market runs that the TK Pro is most suited for. For the rider, the 6-speed Shimano drivetrain features a single chainring and 14-28 rear freewheel that accommodates a wide range of ride profiles and surface conditions.

We’d like to see more gear options that a 7 or 8-speed freewheel would provide, but it may be that the added size and weight of the TK Pro trike requires a thicker and stronger chain such as only available with smaller numbers of gears.

Battery Range

The TK Pro’s 48V/20Ah battery powers a 45-75 mile range based on the rider and payload weight and other variables such as weather and surface conditions. The battery fully recharges in 7 hours using a standard 110V outlet

Trike Frame Design

The TK Pro comes in a one-size-fits-all step-thru frame design that folds up for easier storage. The folded size is 39.9(L) x 29.9(W) x 30.7(H) inches. With a 20.9in/53cm top tube, the TK Pro will fit riders from 5’ to 6’3”+. The maximum combined rider and payload capacity is 450 lbs.

Accessories

The TK Pro comes standard with front and rear metal cargo baskets , fenders, head and tail lights and reflectors. Front and two rear 20″ x 3.0″ tires are fitted to strong and wide 3-inch wide, 36 hole rims built up with sturdy 13 gauge spokes for a sturdy, secure, and comfortable road or trail feel. The wide and plush saddle features an adjustable back rest for increased support and comfort, and it mounts on a quick-release seatpost that can be removed.

Lock-Out Brakes

The Star Union alloy 3-finger hydraulic disc brakes come with an electrical cut-off function and a parking brake feature that easily engages and keeps the trike from rolling away (since the two rear wheels make a kickstand unworkable). Paired to sturdy front and rear brake rotors, the brakes inspire confidence and reliability – something very important for older or mobility-impaired folks that may be using this workhorse of a trike.

Front and Rear Lights with Turn Signals

Head and tail LED lights from Star Union feature a horn function for the front, a brake light function for the rear, and integrated turn signals that illuminate as the trike is turned. These are important functions and thoughtful touches for a trike meant to be used around cars and other traffic in town.

Speed Differential Mechanism

Essential for a vehicle that features two rear “drive” wheels, the Speed Differential works like the mechanism of the same name in your car’s drivetrain, ensuring dynamic integration of the throttle function. This means that the bike will be stable and secure while making turns or riding over uneven surfaces. It’s another feather in the TK Pro’s cap for stability and security.

Pros & Cons of the Mooncool TK Pro

Pros:

  1. Stability and Safety: The three-wheel design offers superior stability compared to a two-wheeled bicycle or e-bike, making it ideal for individuals with balance issues or mobility impairments. The inclusion of features like a speed differential mechanism, powerful hydraulic disc brakes with electric cut-off, and a parking brake further enhance safety.

  2. Utility and Versatility: The TK Pro boasts a high weight capacity (450 lbs), along with front and rear cargo baskets, making it suitable for carrying groceries, cargo, or other items. Its step-through frame and folding design add to its convenience and practicality.

Cons:

  1. Speed Limitation: The 16 mph top speed, while suitable for shared-use paths and neighborhood riding, might be limiting for those who prefer higher speeds or longer commutes.

  2. Gear Range: The 6-speed drivetrain, while adequate, could benefit from more gears (7 or 8) to better handle varied terrain and riding styles. This limitation might be due to design constraints related to the trike’s robustness.
