The Priority Current Plus flies under the radar as a sleek and smooth electric bike, but there’s some seriously sweet tech that’s worth a closer look. This underrated hybrid e-Bike hasn’t been grabbing headlines, yet Priority Bicycles should probably be at the top of your list. I recently tested this updated Priority Current model to explore its premium features and incredible value.

The new Priority Current Plus is the second generation of the brand’s flagship electric bike, the Priority Current (We tested in 2022). The Current slots into the hybrid or city e-Bike categories with no suspension but plenty of comfort-boosting features, including a maintenance-free belt drive. The upgraded version is similar in style, but includes a whole host of well thought-out improvements and premium parts.

Among the biggest changes is the longer-lasting 720 Wh battery that’s up from 500 Wh on the previous model. The motor has upgraded motor firmware for more power and also now includes throttle control. A battery button release makes removing the power pack easier while the bike’s geometry is more upright and stable. I didn’t pick out too many downsides of the original Priority Current when I reviewed it in 2022, yet these upgrades significantly elevate the ride.

Priority Current Plus Mid-Drive Motor

The Current Plus gets its plus-sized performance from a 500W mid-drive motor with a maximum torque of 140 Nm. There have been some firmware upgrades and those monstrous torque levels mean that hill-climbing is a piece of cake.

The Plus version now comes with a thump throttle in addition to the five levels of pedal assist. And Priority has decided to pair that boost with the addition of cut-off power brakes that automatically stop assistance when squeezing the brake levers. The mid-drive motor preserves the natural center of gravity and handling feel of the bike, typically reserved for mid- to high-tier electric bikes. The torque sensor delivers responsive assistance and I found myself only reaching for the throttle when I wanted a short boost or starting from a complete stop.

The urban-focused design and mid-drive motor remind me a lot of Gazelle e-Bikes, popular premium models for daily commuters— though, they come with a slightly higher price tag. Priority’s own motor is slightly louder and has some lag when compared to the Bosch motors used on Gazelle electric bikes, but the difference is minimal. For the price and its additional unique specs like a belt drive, integrated lights, and large battery, Priority Bicycles may indeed have the right of way.

Long-Lasting Battery

E-Bike Frame Battery

As mentioned, the Current Plus comes with a larger 720 Wh battery that provides nearly 40% more range than the original version. The sleekly integrated battery inside the downtube makes the frame slightly larger than the first-gen model, but it’s by no means bulky. I actually think the Current Plus looks far from a typical e-Bike and can easily be mistaken for a more streamlined traditional city bike.

From what I learned throughout testing, getting more than 50 miles from a single charge is totally possible and can be stretched by using even lower levels of pedal assist— range will be lower if you’re sticking to throttle mode. Another positive is that the battery is certified according to the UL2849 safety standard.

Gates CDX Carbon Belt Drive

Belt drive bikes are kind of Priority’s thing. Every model in the brand’s extensive fleet has a belt drive, meaning lower maintenance and higher reliability than traditional chain-driven setups. This is especially convenient for year-round riding and urban use where exposure to bad weather is frequent— no rust here! The internal hub gears are sealed and protected from the elements, so shifting will always be smooth as butter, too.

Shimano vs Enviolo?

One of The Unique Parts About this Version and the Original Priority Current is the Ability to Pick between Shimano and Enviolo Components, Both of Which Are Totally Different in Terms of Shifting | Photo Greg Von Doersten Mountain Weekly News

Beyond the three frame sizes and two color options, the Priority Current Plus comes in two main flavors: Shimano of Enviolo. I’m referring to the gearing system of the e-Bike that’s housed inside the rear hub, connected to the belt drive. Riders can opt for the Shimano Nexus 5-speed setup or the Enviolo stepless gearing.

I tested the Current Plus equipped with the innovative Enviolo gearing. This isn’t your typical gearing because of its “stepless” or what’s called “continuously variable transmission”. This means there aren’t discrete, indexed gears— instead, riders can move through a smooth, continuous adjustment of gear ratios. It’s a super suave riding experience and feels especially efficient on such a premium electric bike like the Current Plus. The choice is up to personal preference, but I was definitely impressed by the intuitive and smooth operation of the Enviolo hub gearing.

Priority Current Plus Wheels and Tires

The premium performance extended to the e-Bike’s wheels and tires, built for versatile urban riding. The 650b wheels are outfitted with wide 50mm tires with a medium tread for a smooth ride over imperfect streets and uneven paths. The large 180mm hydraulic disc brakes provide plenty of stopping power, and cut the motor power when engaged for a safer ride.

Additional convenience comes from the included fenders and integrated lights— the rear light is built into the rear fender. The large display shows all your ride metrics at a glance and the stem is widely adjustable to dial in the perfect riding position, too. The entire bike weighs around 56lbs which is light enough to pick up to lift on a rack or carry up a few stairs, but climbing a few floors would be a tall order.

Who is the Priority Current Plus E-Bike For?

Clean E-Bike Design vs Road Bike

The Priority Current Plus carves its own path with a creative combination of premium parts, but the unique package is suitable for a wide range of riders. The model could be especially exciting for people coming over to e-Bikes from performance-oriented disciplines like road cycling. The city-oriented features and durable design is ideal for daily commuters looking for a more affordably priced premium electric bike.

During testing, we were consistently impressed not only by the Current Plus but also by other models in Priority’s lineup—like their beach cruiser, which brought that same smooth, low-maintenance experience to a more relaxed, laid-back ride.

The Priority Current Plus ($3,299) is a standout hybrid e-Bike that quietly delivers a premium riding experience at a price that feels almost too good to be true. Priority continues to pack an impressive amount of bike into every dollar. The Current Plus, in particular, is a bit of a unicorn in the e-Bike world—offering features usually reserved for much pricier models, making it a smart pick for both city commuters and gear-savvy cyclists looking for serious value and everyday reliability.
