RadRunner Max Electric Bike Review
A new family of Rad Power electric bikes just moved in across the street— the updated RadRunner fleet of utility bikes includes smart tweaks and super practical features. The RadRunner Max leads the pack as the most premium option, equipped with a faster top speed, range extender, and integrated radar sensor. I recently put this maxed-out model to the test and dropped my comprehensive review below.
Fully-Equipped Utility E-Bike

The RadRunner Max is the top-spec model of Rad Power Bikes’ range of utility e-bikes. I say “utility” because they are more compact than a traditional cargo bike— these bikes with smaller wheels and shorter rear ends can also be referred to as short-tail cargo bikes. The Max model maximizes performance because it can reach 28 mph and has room for an extra battery pack if you want to double the range. The sturdy rear rack is extremely modular and has tons of cargo accessories and options to suit your needs.
The step-thru frame design makes it super easy to get on and off the bike. The Max only comes in the shiny emerald green color and fits riders between 4’11” and 6’2”, though taller riders above 6’ may find the handlebars to be a bit low. Rad Power rates the bike for riders ages 16 and up.
750W Rear Hub Motor

Rad Power Bikes have outfitted the Max with a 750W rear hub motor, the highest power option for legal electric bikes. There’s a torque sensor for more responsive pedal assistance and power delivery and the motor pushes out a maximum of 100 Nm of torque. This is especially helpful when the utility bike is loaded up with cargo or an extra passenger or two.
There are five pedal assist modes and a twist throttle for on-demand assistance. The Max can be easily set up as a Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 electric bike, including a California-compliant Class 3 mode due to the state’s recently adopted law. A top speed of 28 mph isn’t too common for Rad Power Bikes, so riders wanting to fast will definitely enjoy the Max’s extra zest.
Rad Battery and Range Extender

The Max comes with a semi-integrated 672 Wh battery tucked into the downtube, providing between 20 to 60 miles of range depending on the level of assistance. That’s plenty of range for most riders, but the real advantage of the Max model is the option to use an additional battery pack to extend the range. Riders can install another battery inside the rear rack to double the range, especially useful for throttled riding or carrying heavy cargo.
The Rad Runner Max is certified according to UL 2849 and UL 2271 standards so you know you’re getting the safest, most reliable setup. I especially appreciated the live-time range estimator on the display, showing the distance you can ride in each selected riding mode.
E-Bike Weight and Payload

The maximalist approach to this electric bike extends to its hefty weight, and that may not be as welcome of a trait for some riders. The entire bike weighs 82 lbs. which puts a wrench into any plans of easily carrying the bike upstairs or lifting it onto a bike rack with little effort. And adding another battery will tack on another ten pounds or so. However, that weight penalty may be worth it because of the sturdy build quality and increased maximum payload capacity of the bike. The Max can support up to 420 lbs. which is pretty monstrous, meaning you can carry as much cargo as you’d like.
Rear Radar Sensor

The much-touted and even more hyped feature of the RadRunner Max is its integrated radar sensor to detect upcoming cars as you ride. The release of the Garmin Vario radar accessory for bikes popularized this bit of kit, but this is the first time I’ve seen such technology built into a bike— though, I’ve suspected it was going to happen sometime soon. And that Garmin sensor costs nearly $200, so riders are getting a lot of value here.
The radar sensor is integrated into the rear light— which also features turn signals— that’s mounted to the back fender. The sensor communicates with the display, showing a real-time animation of a car and differential speed to demonstrate how close the car is behind you. It senses cars approaching from up to 100 meters and triggers the bike’s rear lights to flash to let drivers know you’re there. During testing, the radar worked very well and the live animation was user-friendly. That said, I’ve always been a fan of keeping your ears open to stay alert for passing cars— radar systems are simply an additional level of safety.
Components and Technology

A solid collection of components back up the RadRunner Max’s performance. The utility bike rolls on 20” wheels with wide 3.5” tires with an all-terrain tread. There’s a Shimano Altus 8-speed drivetrain which is pretty standard for these types of bikes and price point, though it’s elevated with a trigger shifter and dual chain guide. The hydraulic disc brakes have upgraded, thicker rotors for even more control and stopping power considering the added speed and weight of the bike.

The Max is an incredible smooth ride due to the high-volume tires and the 80mm front suspension. I found the updated seat to be very comfortable and the ergonomic locking grips were a premium touch, too. There are high- and low-beam settings for the front light and a USB port on the display. There are a few loose or too-long cables around the bike but nothing that a few zip ties can’t fix.
It’s worth noting that the Max— and not the other RadRunner models— is compatible with Apple’s Find My application to track the location of the bike, essentially there’s an integrated AirTag in the bike to protect against theft.
