Anon Merak WaveCel Review: Teton Tested in the Rugged Wyoming Backcountry
The Tetons don’t exactly go easy on gear, and the Anon Merak Wavecel Helmet was put through the absolute ringer for this review. From the high-alpine exposure of Grand Teton National Park to the steep, technical glades of Teton Pass and the rugged, wind-whipped ridgelines of the Snake River Range, I gave this helmet no days off. In a region where the terrain is as unforgiving as the weather is unpredictable, the Merak proved itself to be more than just a piece of “techy” headwear—it’s a robust insurance policy for your most valuable asset.
WaveCel Protection That Doesn’t Weigh You Down

The standout feature is undoubtedly the WaveCel technology. While most helmets rely on standard foam, the Merak uses a cellular structure that behaves like a crumple zone, designed to absorb both linear and rotational impacts. It’s the kind of “superior protection” that gives you a bit more confidence when navigating a tight couloir or a dense field of Teton pines.
What’s truly impressive, however, is that for all its internal tech, the helmet remains relatively lightweight. Usually, high-safety ratings come with a “bowling ball on your neck” sensation, but the Merak stays light enough for long bootpacks up couloirs, high consequence touring with overhead exposure where protection and temperature regulation is most important.

The BOA® 360 Fit System
Fit is where many helmets fail, but the integration of the BOA® 360° Fit System makes the Merak feel almost custom-molded. With a quick turn of the dial, the internal cable tightens evenly around the head rather than just pushing your forehead against the front of the shell. This was especially appreciated during high-wind transitions on Teton Pass, where a secure fit is the difference between a focused descent and a distracting, wobbling helmet.

The interior is plush without being bulky, ensuring that the safety tech doesn’t come at the cost of a headache.
Versatile Climate Control
The ventilation system on the Merak is a masterclass in functional design. It features a top-mounted slider that allows you to open or close the vents on the fly—even with bulky mitts on. During a high-output skin up with some overhead exposure from potential rockfall, I could dump heat instantly; then, as soon as the winds hit, and we stopped moving I could seal it up to trap warmth.
Complementing this versatility are the removable earpads. For those warmer spring sessions or when you’re working hard on the ascent and need better hearing and airflow, popping the pads out transforms the helmet’s profile and temperature regulation entirely.

Pros & Cons:
Pros:
- Very comfortable helmet with easy to use adjustable BOA cable for fitment.
- Wavecell technology provides superior protection for both rockfall, and ski/board crashes
- Great ventilation system with adjustable vents, removable ear pads, and minimal foam while maintaining comfort.
Cons:
- Not the lightest helmet on the market, but when you go the ultralight route, you also sacrifice protection.
Overall Impression
A Robust Insurance Policy for the Tetons.
After weeks of testing in some of the most demanding terrain in Wyoming, the Anon Merak WaveCel stands out as a premier “do-it-all” helmet. It manages to balance the high-level safety of WaveCel with the creature comforts of a luxury resort helmet. While it’s certainly an investment, the combination of the BOA system, adjustable venting, and lightweight build makes it a top-tier choice for anyone splitting their time between the resort and the backcountry. If you value your gray matter and want to stay comfortable while protecting it, this is the lid to beat.
