Poncho Outdoors Shirt Review: Powder River, Falfurrias, & Young Buck

I recently picked out and received three shirts from Poncho Outdoors: two for myself and one for my 7-year-old son. For myself, I selected one shirt from the denim collection, THE FALFURRIAS, and one from the flannel collection, THE POWDER RIVER. Both shirts share standout styling details like mother-of-pearl snaps and western-style shoulder yokes, which give them a subtle but confident western character that feels right at home in Jackson Hole, WY.

3 The Powder River: From Teton Village to Teton Thai
4 The Young Buck: Camo for the “Constantly-in-Motion” Grom
5 Overall Impression: Hard-Wearing Shirts for the Modern Ski Bum

Western Character, Teton-Tested Practicality

Poncho Outdoors packs a few practical touches into their shirts, including a built-in sunglasses wipe and a clever spot to secure your sunglasses’ temples in the pocket for safe keeping. Those small details, combined with the overall look, make these shirts feel both useful and dialed for a lifestyle that blends mountain town function with a bit of western flare.

The Falfurrias: Denim Performance for the Mangy Moose

THE FALFURRIAS, on the other hand, has been a bit more of an acquired taste. The stretch denim itself is excellent—soft, stretchy, and forgiving—and the size Medium fits my 5’6”, 180-pound frame really well. The styling is distinctly Western, and I think that’s what’s taking me some time to get fully comfortable with.

After watching thousands of tourists dress up in cowboy gear around the Jackson Town Square each night, I’m definitely more of a ‘keep it classic’ kind of guy than an all-out urban cowboy. That said, I really like this shirt – it’s one I’d save for a night out, which for me usually means a couple of concerts each ski season at the World Famous Mangy Moose..

The Powder River: From Teton Village to Teton Thai

For my laid-back approach to fashion, THE POWDER RIVER is the clear everyday winner. It has built-in wrinkle-resistant fabric and hidden collar snaps that keep the shirt looking fresh, even if I’ve worn it most of the week. The moisture-wicking stretch fabric moves comfortably with me throughout the day, whether I’m running to catch the bus out to Teton Village, tuning skis in the garage, or grabbing a bite at Teton Thai after a day on the hill. In the colder months around here, this shirt slips into my daily life almost without thinking; it just works.

The Young Buck: Camo for the “Constantly-in-Motion” Grom

Remember being a kid and feeling totally bummed when you got a shirt for Christmas instead of a toy? I basically did that to my son this year—though I did pair it with some Darn Tough ski socks. I picked out THE YOUNG BUCK for my 7-year-old because it’s camo, and he is absolutely obsessed with anything hunting camouflage related.

The performance fabric is perfect for my little “sweat-hog” and his constantly-in-motion lifestyle. It also cleans up impressively well, even after multiple meals have mysteriously migrated from plate to shirt front. Sometimes he forgets how to use a fork, but he never forgets to use a knife.

Overall Impression: Hard-Wearing Shirts for the Modern Ski Bum

All in all, I’m very pleased with the fit and finish of Poncho Outdoors shirts. The fabrics feel durable and well-chosen, which matters to me because, staying true to my ski-bum roots, I tend to wear shirts well past their normal life span.

I have a Patagonia A/C Steersman that’s nearly see-through and torn, yet it still ends up in my bag for every warm-weather trip. I’m hoping THE POWDER RIVER becomes that same kind of go-to for my cold-weather travels. If you’re in the market for a sharp, hard-wearing, and functional button-down for just about any climate, Poncho Outdoors probably has a shirt that will suit your fancy.

From a young age Marty was introduced to outdoor recreation and the gear associated with it through the Boy Scouts. One of his fondest pastimes was visiting the local gear shops in metro Detroit in search of the perfect setup for a backpacking trip to Isle Royal National Park or for a 10 trek at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristos. Professionally as a former snow sports hard goods buyer and ski tester as well as a lifetime in and out of the outdoor retail industry he has a knack for getting people on the right gear based on his own experiences. Marty’s current ski and bike partner is his 6 year old son. You can find him and JM out in Teton Village on any given day exploring the trails or slopes. When he’s not out teaching JM the ropes Marty is either planning or traveling to bike and ski.
