If your top priority when making a purchase is durability and long-term performance, this is the PFD you have been looking for.  One of the standout features of the Astral GreenJacket Wild Things PFD is its ability to consistently deliver top-notch performance while retaining its appearance even after years of heavy use.

The materials used resist water absorption which is key for preventing degradation due to prolonged exposure to moisture.  This also makes the vest suitable for both freshwater and saltwater excursions.  The outer shell is made from high-denier Cordura nylon, a fabric known for its thick, robust fibers that provide exceptional resistance to abrasions, punctures, and general wear and tear.  Given its rugged feel, I was surprised at how light it was.  This ergonomic PFD weighs in at a mere 2.9 lbs.

The interior is smooth and padded with multiple adjustment points, including side straps, shoulder straps, and a torso belt, all designed to minimize friction points that could cause chafing.  After taking a few minutes to dial in the fit, the vest was so comfortable I forgot I was wearing it.

River Tech Features

Astral emphasized safety in its features.  There is a dedicated compartment behind the front panel that allows for secure storage of a throw rope as well as pockets that have a quick-release tab that stores and gives quick access to a web tow.  Also, there’s the “Flotection” feature which provides protection for the back and ribs from impacts.

Something I noticed right away was the placement of the compartments.  The particularly useful pocket was the front clamshell which had nicely multiple internal compartments for organizing storage.  Zippers can be fickle, so I was glad to see Astral chose a highly reputable and reliable brand, YKK.  The zipper’s auto-lock feature is the double reassurance you’d want while engaging in high-intensity activities.

This design features limited-edition artwork inspired by “Where the Wild Things Are” blends functionality with artistic flair.  I love that Astral teamed up with a local artist who shares the love for adventure and is from the same town Astral was founded in.  Supporting local and knowing you’re getting a tried and trusted product gave me a great sense of satisfaction.

I highly recommend this PFD.  This top of the line, sustainable life vest was worth the price alone, but knowing that I’m also supporting initiatives (Astral donates a portion of the proceeds to sustainability projects) and individuals who share the same appreciation for the outdoors made this purchase feel worthwhile and a no-brainer, if you’re spending time on the river this year a PFD is a must have piece of gear.
