Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Jacket Review

As a longtime fan of Patagonia’s blend of sustainability and durability, I was stoked to put the Women’s Storm Shift Jacket to the test in Jackson Hole. Known for its versatility and top-notch technical features, I wanted to see if this jacket could handle both resort riding and unpredictable mountain conditions. Spoiler alert: it has its strengths, but there were some aspects that didn’t quite work for me.

Patagonia Women’s Jacket Fit

Patagonia has a reputation for offering a great balance between functionality and style, but I struggled a bit with the fit of the Storm Shift. At 5’3”, I found the jacket to be a little too long. While it’s designed for a “regular fit” that works well for layering, I’m more inclined to baggy, relaxed snowboarding styles.

The jacket felt a bit stiff, and I tend to gravitate towards maximum movement, especially when I’m carving through powder or playing around in the park. The Storm Shift was more tailored than I prefer, and though I ordered my usual size (medium), it felt a bit tight when I tried layering underneath. If you’re more into freestyle riding, and want something that lets you move easily, this may not be the best choice for you.

How Does it Perform On Snow?

Lucky for me a huge storm cycle hit Jackson Hole this past week, so I got to see how the jacket handled in a variety of conditions.

Pre-storm: Cold 0-10°F – Overcast Conditions.
Confession: I made an amateur move and forgot my goggles, so I was counting on this jacket to keep me warm. I could feel the freezing air whipping my face. The Storm Shift did a solid job blocking the chill and keeping the rest of my body warm!

Storm: 20-40°F – heavy snow & rain.
The Stoke for this storm was high but Mother Nature had other plans, and the expected powder turned into hail and eventually sleet. The Storm Shift Jacket excelled in these stormy and shifty conditions. I stayed warm in high elevation and dry on the lower rainy parts of the mountain. The jacket’s longer length did help keep snow from my upper thighs when on the chairlift which was nice, but overall, I prefer less restriction.

Storm Shift Jacket Features

The Patagonia Storm Shift Jacket absolutely nailed it on the features. All the pockets you could ever need for a phone, ski pass, snacks or any other essentials. The Storm Shift has a ton of practical storage: two zippered hand pockets, a zippered chest pocket, an interior pocket, and a forearm to navigate through the gates easily.

Another great feature is the easy-access pit zips, which quickly release heat. The last of the standout features of this jacket is the built-in RECCO® reflector. Thankfully I did not need to use any of these features, but it did give me peace of mind! The RECCO® system allows rescue teams to use a directional signal to locate you in case of an emergency.

Eco-Friendly Construction

Patagonia’s reputation for sustainable fashion is one of the main aspects that sets this jacket apart. The Storm Shift is made with 100% recycled GORE-TEX fabric. This jacket is made intentionally without added PFAS, so it’s better for the planet and that makes me proud to wear it. What are PFAS you may ask? Per-Polyfluroralkyl Substances, also known as forever chemicals, that are resistant to degradation. Patagonia has made sure this jacket keeps you warm and dry while trying to prevent future contamination of the environment.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

• GORE-TEX for excellent waterproof, breathable, and windproof protection.
• Strategic insulation provides targeted warmth without adding bulk.
• Multiple functional pockets
• RECCO® reflector for added safety
• Eco-friendly construction with 100% recycled materials.

Cons:

• The fit may not be ideal for shorter riders or those who prefer a loose, baggy style.
• Stiff fabric limits movement for riders who prioritize flexibility.
• Longer length may feel too long for snowboarders who prefer a more movement.

Overall Impression

The Patagonia Women’s Storm Shift Jacket ($499.99) is a solid choice for resort riders however it’s especially suited for backcountry riders, as it offers reliable warmth, and durability without the compromise of having to layer. The jacket’s more tailored fit is a bonus for backcountry use, as it won’t catch on trees or other obstacles while you’re navigating through the wilderness. However, if you’re into freestyle riding or just cruising around, you might find it a bit restricting. For those seeking a versatile, high-performance jacket that excels in both technical features and sustainability, the Storm Shift is an excellent investment.

Patagonia’s Women’s Storm Shift Jacket is a testament to the brand’s unwavering commitment to quality, sustainability, and innovation. I was stoked to get into the newest version of the Storm Shift. If you are looking for one jacket for both resort and backcountry riding here it is.  In this review, I’ll share the features that make this jacket a top choice for skiers or snowboarders.

Fit

The regular fit of the Women’s Storm Shift jacket finds an optimal balance between comfort and functionality. Tailored for ease of movement, this jacket adapts seamlessly to your movement while you’re navigating the steep, the deep or on piste. Patagonia has been adjusting their sizes and fits, I rode a small and found I had room to layer with a puffy coat on colder resort riding days. The regular fit provides more room in the arms, length and body. Based on my experience, I would recommend ordering true to size or down one size if between sizes.

Pockets and Pit Zips

Patagonia’s commitment to user-friendly design is evident in these features, easy-access pit zips to enhance ventilation during activity, an external hem adjustment  allows for quick and customization and the powder gasket creates a seal to prevent snow from getting in the jacket even. I like the access of the zippered chest pocket ideal for your phone and the zippered forearm pocket. The zipper forearm pocket is a new must have location for your ski pass with most ski resorts now using the RFID scanners.

Also, the inclusion of an interior zippered chest pocket adds a  secure space for keys or credit cards which a lot of ski and snowboard jackets are missing. These intelligently designed pockets and features highlight the functionality of this jacket.

Eco-Friendly Jacket

This eco-friendly construction aligns with Patagonia’s commitment to sustainability and ensures durability. Crafted from a tough, 2-layer 100% Recycled GORE-TEX fabric, the Storm Shift jacket provides a shield against the elements. The jacket does incorporate a built-in RECCO® reflector. This technology enhances search and rescue efforts in the event of an emergency, providing peace of mind while skiing or snowboarding various terrains.

These two features, both GORE-TEX and RECCO® reflector, should be top of your list if looking for one jacket to ride at the resort and in the backcountry.

Liner

The unique liner is soft and breathable adding to the comfort level of the Storm Shift jacket. The liner serves as an additional layer of insulation without adding unnecessary bulk, making it wearable in a range of temperatures. Whether facing a brisk wind or a wet snowfall with the breathable interior liner, I never feel muggy in this highly waterproof coat. Going back to my One Jacket search, this liner has enhanced the overall versatility of the jacket.
