Vans MTE Crosspath XC GORE-TEX Review: The New Rugged Standard for Mountain Living
From Skate Heritage to Alpine Utility
Vans was founded in 1966 in Anaheim, California, the brand started by manufacturing shoes and selling them directly to the public from its first factory and storefront on the same day. In the 1970s, Vans became closely connected to Southern California’s skateboarding culture. Skaters embraced the brand’s durable canvas uppers and signature waffle rubber soles, which offered excellent grip and board feel.
In 1993 Vans started making snowboard boots, combining their skate style with high quality tech features. Then in 2013 to celebrate 20 years in the snow industry Vans launched their MTE mountain shoe line. One of their newest offerings is the MTE Crosspath XC GORE-TEX.
Built for the Mountain Daily Grind

I’ve been absolutely loving my new Vans MTE Crosspath XC GORE-TEX shoes—they’ve quickly become my daily driver for wet and cold early morning dog walks and drives up to the ski hill here in the Tetons. From the moment I stepped out in them, I could tell these aren’t just typical skate shoes; they’re seriously built for the unpredictable weather that defines mountain living.
GORE-TEX Shield: Managing the Mud and Slush

First off, the GORE-TEX waterproof upper is awesome. Even after walking through heavy slush and wet spring snow, my feet stayed completely dry and comfortable—performance I didn’t always expect from a brand rooted in street style.
The breathable membrane ensures you don’t feel like you’re trapped in a heavy, clunky boot. However, it is worth noting that on particularly cold mornings, my feet did feel the chill. Between the breathable upper and the low-top style, these are designed as a high-performance transition shoe rather than a replacement for a dedicated, insulated deep-winter boot.
Vibram Traction: Confidence on Slick Mountain Surfaces

The grip on snow and slick surfaces is impressive. Vans utilized a Vibram outsole with an aggressive tread pattern that really bites into icy patches and packed snow. This gives me a high level of confidence with every step, whether I’m navigating slippery sidewalks in town or trekking through a snowy park trail. These shoes hold steady and don’t leave me second-guessing my footing on the variable terrain we see during the shoulder seasons.
Fit and Technical Comfort for the Active Foot
The comfort level is solid. The cushioning is substantial enough that long walks don’t leave my feet sore. I particularly like the secure fit provided by the speed-lace system; it makes them easy to adjust on the go, or you can leave them slightly loose to use as a quick slip-on for a drive to the mountain.
The shoes fit great right out of the box and were true to size. I typically wear wide toe-box trail runners, and I was pleasantly surprised that these didn’t give me the “cramped toe” feeling that many other trail-cross style shoes do. I will note that the stiff technical fabric of the upper did crease across the top of my foot during the first long walk, creating a small sore spot, but it is already softening up as they break in.
Final Verdict: A Premium Hybrid for Mountain Living

All in all, if you’re looking for a stylish everyday shoe that doesn’t shy away from cold, wet weather, the Vans MTE Crosspath XC GORE-TEX delivers. It’s the perfect hybrid for the mountain town resident who needs technical performance without sacrificing the classic aesthetic.
