Smaller, lighter, more powerful, and packed with more features and new technology, the new Mammut S2 Avalanche Beacon is their flagship professional beacon and has many more offerings than its predecessor, the popular Barryvox S model we tested in 2024. Is it worth the upgrade? Let go over some of the stand out new features and figure out who this beacon is made for.

Reliability in a search is non-negotiable. This model is a top performer in our comprehensive guide to the Best Avalanche Beacons, where we compare speed and signal suppression across 20+ units.

Compact Design: Lighter, Thinner, and Pocket-Friendly

Weighing in at 180 grams, and at 4.5”x 0.8” x 2.7”, this Swiss made beacon is 22% thinner and 14% lighter than the S model, making it one of the smallest beacons on the market. It fits quite well in your pocket, and is fairly unobtrusive when wearing the provided harness system. I tested out the harness on day one, but found I liked having it in my pocket better.

Its tiny size was unnoticeable while riding, and freed up my torso area to keep my phone in my jacket to stay beyond the 20 cm minimum distance recommended to avoid signal interference. Another cool new change is that it uses only 2x AAA batteries instead of the 3x AAAs in the S model, but can still stay powered on for longer.

Redesigned Interface & High-Contrast Display

Although it is marketed as a professional beacon, its redesigned interface is designed for beginner ease of use. Upon powering up, it can automatically perform a group check. Very helpful to expedite a beacon check at the beginning of a tour, and it can test the signal strength of the others in your group. The new Memory in Pixel (MIP) high contrast display is one the best on the market for readability in bright sun, even with dark lenses on. Its 3 antenna design and 70m search range are the same as the previous model, but it’s features like the intelligent fine search function that really starts to make the S2 stand out from both the S model, and other avalanche transceivers out there.

Intelligent Search & The Probe Indicator

With Intelligent Search, you are guided through your search with visual and audio cues to assist in your decision making and help shave precious minutes off your search time. For me, one of the most valuable features is the probe indicator. It is quite common to waste time during a search by attempting to get your distance reading as low as possible before beginning to probe. The S2 determines when a minimum burial depth has been found, and prompts you via probe display to switch from your fine search and begin probing to pinpoint your victim. That is awesome!

The beacon also has the ability for speech guided prompts to assist in a search, but for now this feature is not available in the US, Switzerland,Germany, and Austria due to patent issues. I hope to see this feature unlocked soon though, as guided voice prompts would be amazing in an emergency situation and really allow this beacon’s full capabilities to be put to use. Also, a Deep burial mode will guide you into fine search when a depth of more than 3m is detected.

All these features are designed to help guide the beginner more efficiently through the search phases and reduce overall search time, a huge plus in a high stress situation when every minute counts.

Managing Digital Noise: The Interference Guard

Another cool feature worth noting is the Interference Guard. In this digital world we live in, devices are literally everywhere emitting various frequency signals that can cause signal interference. Your smartphone, fitbit, earbuds, gopro, and radio, are all sending and receiving signals all the time. Multiply that by others in your group and we can be swamped by dozens of conflicting signals, even deep in the backcountry.

According to Barryvox, the Interference Guard automatically reduces and manages signal interference, and informs you of any potential conflicting signals in both transmit, and search mode. This is a welcome feature, and one I consider quite awesome!

Professional Features & The Barryvox App

Via the Barryvox app, a slew of training material, Pro level features, and customizability options are available to make the S2 one of the most advanced professional beacons out there. You can utilize the extended analog function using the S2’s powerful signal processing and algorithmic power, or the Pro search setting that allows one to blend the digital display for direction and distance with an analog tone or access alternative search modes.

Pro Check can determine the specific pulse durations and period lengths of other transceivers in your group, and in the case of secondary slides/ burials, the beacon will automatically revert to send mode when a searcher is unmoving for 4 minutes. In the event of multiple burials, the Auto select shows you the strongest signal first and with the Scrolling function you can view up to 16 victims. With the Selection function you can mark and unmark as needed to more efficiently organize multiple searches at once.

These only scratch the surface of the Pro feature options and configurations. Through the app, you can truly customize your interface for any situation.

Is the $599 Upgrade Worth It?

So, why would you want to upgrade to the S2 beacon, especially with a price tag of $599!? Well, it has some of the best new beacon technology in the market today, and is geared for the professional guide, Ski Patrol, or Search and Rescue person. If you need the most feature rich options available to help with day to day use and to perform rescue operations as effectively as possible, this is that beacon.

But for those who are new to backcountry travel and exposure to avalanche terrain, or a more casual transceiver users who need to update their old beacon, the S2’s new interface and feature list seems like it could truly assist with expanding your ability to efficiently and effectively save lives in an emergency situation.

Safety Recall

*It must be noted that Barrvox/ Mammut issued a recall for the S2 beacon, due to possible problems with the on/send/search mode switch. If you send in your beacon they will test it for you and replace it if necessary. Any beacon sold on Mammut.com after 11/19/24 had been checked out. If you have a new beacon yo can contact Mammut to see if yours has been checked or if if should be sent in for testing.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Compact & Interference-Ready: It is 22% thinner and 14% lighter than the previous “S” model, making it exceptionally pocket-friendly, while the “Interference Guard” effectively manages digital noise from smartphones and GoPros to ensure search accuracy.

  • Streamlined Rescue Efficiency: The “Probe Indicator” and high-contrast MIP display (readable even in harsh alpine glare) remove the guesswork from fine searches, helping to shave off critical seconds when every moment counts.

Cons

  • Premium Price & Regional Restrictions: At $599, it is a significant investment, and the helpful voice-guided search prompts are currently unavailable in the U.S. and DACH regions due to patent issues.

  • Safety Recall Context: Early production units were subject to a mandatory safety recall regarding the mode switch, requiring users to verify their device’s safety status before heading into the backcountry.

Overall Impression

No amount of technology can ever replace knowledge and experience. Understand  that taking avalanche rescue training courses, practicing the skills learned in a variety of rescue situations, choosing good partners, and most importantly, making good decisions while traveling in avalanche terrain, is paramount. But for those who are on the path of learning how to safely recreate in the backcountry, or are going down the path of getting Avalanche safety certified with aspirations of being a professional guide or ski patroller, the Mammut Barryvox S2 is a fantastic beacon to have with you on your path.

A true beacon to grow with you as you expand your backcountry safety knowledge and experience.
