Smith Venture Sunglasses Review: Long-Term Teton Team Test

Finding the best sunglasses for the mountains is about more than style; it’s about performance in a landscape that offers no mercy to low-quality optics. At 10,000 feet, UV radiation is significantly more intense, and a Teton Pass whiteout can leave you blind without the right technical lenses.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Smith Optics, a legacy that began in 1966 when Dr. Bob Smith invented the first anti-fog goggle at his kitchen table. Six decades later, that original “ski bum” spirit of solving problems for real riders lives on in technical frames like the Smith Venture.

We don’t do “office-chair reviews” here. Our collective of Teton-based mountain athletes, professional guides, and ski patrollers have put these sunglasses through a true “Teton Shakedown” across multiple seasons. Below, we look at the Venture from two different perspectives: a fresh 2026 field test followed by our original 2024 impressions.

Ski Touring

I most recently tested the Venture Sunglasses on a ski tour around the south side of Teton Pass (Powder Reserves, Shamrock Spurs, and Columbia Bowls 1 and 3). I found the Venture’s Chromapop lenses effective at adapting to variable light conditions throughout the day, and the TPU side shields effective at shielding my face and eyes from blowing precipitation. 

Smith Venture Sunglasses Fit

The Smith Venture Sunglasses are offered in small, medium, and large frames. I opted for the medium frames and found the coverage to be an ideal surface area that shields my eyes fully while sitting high enough on my nose to prevent fogging or interference while wearing them with a buff or classic PNW hat/helmet touring combo. The Venture’s temple and nose pads feature an excellent non-stick grip that keeps them comfortably situated while bending over and looking down. The polyurethane side shields sit comfortably on the skin, providing a light and wind barrier without digging in or scratching. 

Glacier Glasses Function

The Smith Venture Sunglasses come equipped with all of the modern innovations one could hope for from adventure-oriented optics. Available lenses include ChromaPop Glacier Photochromic Copper Blue Mirror, ChromaPop Glass polarized, or ChromaPop Polarized. In the spirit of glacier glasses, I opted for the ChromaPop Glacier Photochromic Copper Blue Mirror lenses for the additional tint and adaptability to varying light conditions. These lenses range from a deep blue tint in fully lit, S4 conditions to a crisp violet in overcast S1 conditions. The lenses do a phenomenal job at enhancing contrast and color throughout the tint range, particularly in low-light conditions. I was able to look across each aspect in S1 conditions during a squall and identify features such as popovers and wind lips that were difficult to pick out with my naked eye.

Like most photochromic lenses I’ve tried, the Glacier’s transition to different light conditions is not immediate, sometimes taking about ten minutes to develop crisp contrast. However, they are still perfectly functional to see out of during that time. While the anti-fog coating on the Glacier lenses does a decent job, they still fogged up a few times on the uphill. I suspect the side shields played a role in this; however, it was a decently warm day for a ski tour (25-30 degrees Fahrenheit), and some fogging is to be expected.

The Venture Sunglasses also come with an elastic croakie that allows the user to conveniently hang them around their neck without fumbling with the sideshields to fold them up. When it does come time to stash them in their case, the shields simply snap out of the frames and fold inwards. The TPU sidesheilds are removable; however, in this instance, they were handy for blocking wind and precipitation. They are also excellent at blocking out peripheral glare. 

Who are These Built For?

The Smith Venture Sunglasses, like many sporty Smith models, are as much a statement piece as a practical one. Wear them around town to assert your outdoor identity and look rad doing it, or save them for the mountains and reap the modern technological benefits of optics suited for any adventure. While the sideshields and rounded lenses are reminiscent of glacier glasses, I would not hesitate to wear the Ventures for any outdoor activity in any season. 

Overall Impression

At a $257 price point, the Smith Venture represents a premium investment in your mountain kit. While it’s often easy to view sunglasses as replaceable, the technical superiority of this glass makes them a pair you’ll be highly motivated to preserve and rely on for seasons to come.

Now that I’ve experienced the optical clarity in the field, these have moved from a “nice-to-have” accessory to a permanent, well-protected staple in my backcountry gear rotation.

In my opinion, you’re paying for the incredible ChromaPop Photochromic lenses when you buy the Ventures, a lens that I wore at dusk and could identify more details in the matted twists and tangles of snow-laden Ponderosas than with my polarized sunglasses at noon on a sunny day.

I had the opportunity to test out Smith Venture Sunglasses during a balmy high pressure window in the Wasatch. Overall I was impressed by the performance of these glasses despite being a female with a smaller face. Here is my assessment:

These shades are pretty sweet, but being someone with a smaller face, the glasses didn’t fit as securely as others. It wasn’t a deal-breaker, but I found myself readjusting them every so often to keep them snug. Despite that, they still felt lightweight and comfortable, which is a huge plus when you’re out there for hours on end. Whilst skinning I noticed minimal fogging in the lenses – though the fogging that did occur may be attributed to the pair being on the slightly larger end for my face.

The lenses measure in at 56 mm and bridge width at 19 mm.

Smith Venture ChromaPop Sunglasses

Regarding lens technology, the Smith Optic Venture sunglasses boast commendable clarity and contrast thanks to Smith’s ChromaPop lens technology. I was able to view features surprisingly well, observing winddrifts and pockets on the descent. I am always impressed by how much my visual perception is enhanced when wearing lenses with ChromaPop color enhancement technology.

Removable Side Shields + Retainer Strap

The inclusion of a removable shield offers additional protection against environmental elements such as wind, sun and debris, increasing the functionality of the sunglasses. This feature came in handy while booting up an exposed ridgeline; it allowed for protection from the wind and sun and a more focused field of vision. While I was on a tour in the Wasatch, these glacier sunglasses would also be perfect for glacier expeditions with the maximal protection that the shields offer. I also noticed that the shields enhanced my experience on the downhill, as there was minimal wind exposure.

The glasses also include an adjustable retainer strap that proved useful in the backcountry. I was able to take the glasses off easily without worrying that I was going to drop them and was able to adjust the strap so that the glasses could fit securely on my head, almost mimicking goggles.

Who are These Smith Sunglasses For?

These high performance glasses are perfect for the outdoor enthusiast desiring maximal protection from the elements. With removable side shields that protect goggle-like, and secure fit from the retainers, these Smith glasses are made to enhance both uphill and downhill performance for alpinists and skiers alike. I like that the Smith Venture Sunglasses help to reduce glare thanks to the polarized lenses which was especially notable while touring in the high alpine on bright sunny days.

Overall Impression

Coming in at ($215.00, Smith’s Venture Sunglasses are a totally worth the price if you’re looking for a pair off functional and stylish glacier glasses with removable side shields and the awesome ChromaPop lenses that work in all light conditions.
