The MaxGear Darkstar 32L Camping Backpack is a solid option for quick overnights and everyday adventurers from a weekend on the trail to the daily commute. Don’t let it’s military style MOLLE design turn you off, this pack is made for everyone.

Tactical Functionality for the Trail

MOLLE System
Backpack Offers a Plethora of Attachment Points | Photo Mike Hardaker Mountain Weekly News

While originally designed for military use, the MOLLE system has found a dedicated following among campers and hikers for its ability to expand a pack’s carrying capacity and organize gear efficiently. For the non-military user, this translates to the ability to attach a variety of pouches and accessories, such as water bottle holders, first-aid kits, or tool pouches, to the exterior of the pack for quick and easy access.

A standout feature of the Darkstar 32L is its MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) system. I can say this most likely the first backpack I have tested with MOLLE as it tends to lean more toward combat / tactical packs. This system, compatible with both PALS (Pouch Attachment Ladder System) and MALICE CLIPS, offers a significant advantage for those who value customization or just want to look the part.

Built to Withstand the Elements

MaxGear built the Darkstar 32L from 500D honeycomb fabric, a material known for its tear-resistant and water-repellent properties. The “honeycomb” structure has an almost ripstop like feel to it in the hand, which helps to prevent small tears from spreading.

Toss in Duraflex buckles and YKK zippers along with the inclusion of British Coats cables for stitching, and you can see how MaxGear International is building packs designed for the long haul.

I tested the backpack while trail clearing in nasty timber and even for a short overnight camping trip. Both times I never had to worry about the pack’s durability or ability to carry all the tools and gear I needed for a day / overnight in the mountains.

For hikers needing a more traditional backpacking setup with added volume, the Forclaz Trek 100 Easyfit 50L is worth comparing.

Comfort and Capacity on the Go

With a capacity of 32 Liters, the Darkstar 32L offers plenty of storage for a day trip or even a minimalist overnight adventure. The hip belt and an additional chest strap are nice for when your lugging around heavier loads, helping to transfer weight from the shoulders to the hips and improve comfort on longer days in the mountains.

The backpack also features a physiologically contoured back panel. This ergonomic design is intended to conform to the natural curve of the spine, promoting better posture and reducing strain. The combination of the padded back panel with padded shoulder straps is noticeable and a welcome relief, people traveling through the airport with this backpack will surely agree.

Versatility for Everyday Use

Beyond its outdoor-focused features, the Darkstar 32L is also positioned as a versatile pack for everyday carry (EDC), school, or travel. A significant contributor to this versatility is the inclusion of a built-in laptop sleeve, making it a solid pick for anyone wanting an easy and safe way to transport their laptop.

The pack’s 13 total pockets and rigging points offer numerous options for organizing smaller items, ensuring that essentials are always within reach. The availability of five color options—Black, Black Camo, Orange, Blue, and Grey—allows for a degree of personal expression.

The MaxGear Darkstar 32L Camping Backpack, based on its stated features is a well-thought-out and durable mid size backpack that can be used both for outdoors and everyday use. With high-quality materials like 500D honeycomb fabric, Duraflex buckles, and YKK zippers, coupled with a highly customizable MOLLE system, makes this a standout pack for those that value function and durability. The ergonomic back panel and load-distributing straps shows this isn’t just some fly by night company, they made a backpack that’s comfortable to wear.
