Saris SuperClamp G4 2-Bike Rack Review: The Lightweight Heavy-Hitter
I last put the Saris SuperClamp through the ringer back in 2019. It was a solid performer then, but as our gear has evolved—getting heavier, more technical, and more expensive—we needed to see if the new Saris SuperClamp G4 could keep up. We spent the last few weeks in Jackson Hole transitioning from our 2027 snowboard tests to summer prep, putting this rack through high-speed highway miles and washboard dirt roads to see if it earns the TETON Tested seal of approval.
Setup and Installation: No “Hulk Hogan” Strength Required

One of the immediate wins for the G4 is the weight. At just 45 lbs, it is significantly lighter than the Saris MHS 2-Bike system we previously reviewed.

Installation was a breeze, taking roughly 30 minutes from unboxing to being road-ready. We found that building the rack while it’s already attached to the trailer hitch is the most efficient way to do it. It comes with all the necessary tools and a key for the locking system, making it an intuitive, one-person job.
Saris SuperClamp 2Wheel & Tire Fit

The SuperClamp G4 is engineered for versatility across a wide “quiver” of bikes. If you are a family of riders or a gear-head with multiple setups, this is your baseline:
-
Wheel Size Diameter: Fits 20″ to 29″ wheels. The adjustable front wheel block allows you to move between a kid’s bike and a full-size 29er in seconds.
-
Max Tire Width: Accommodates up to 4.5″ tires out of the box. This makes it a rare lightweight rack that is truly “Fat Bike Ready.” Note: For tires wider than 4″, some specialized wheel holder kits may be required for a perfect seat, but for most standard MTBs and fat bikes, it’s a plug-and-play fit.
-
Max Wheelbase: Fits bikes with a wheelbase up to 52″.
The Engineering Secret: The Trigger System
The standout feature on the G4 is the integrated trigger system for the spring-loaded arms. In our test, this proved to be the easiest and most reliable way to secure bike tires to a rack on the market today.
Instead of fumbling with clunky sliding mechanisms that can jam with Teton road grit, and having to use a tool to adjust wheel sizing, you simply use the trigger to open and close the arm. It provides a tactile, locked-in feel that ensures the tire is pinched exactly where it needs to be. This is the kind of reliable engineering that sets Saris apart.
Zero-Frame Contact

The SuperClamp G4 is a platform-style rack designed for those who treat their bikes like high-value assets.
-
Zero Frame Contact: The dual hook arms secure the bikes by the tires, meaning you never have to worry about the rack scratching your custom paint job, putting stress on a carbon frame or your bike falling off while driving.
-
Spring-Loaded Arms: A massive safety feature. These arms maintain tension even if your tires lose some pressure during a long drive into the backcountry. Although as we mention on dirt roads especially with pot holes, slow it down and drive at the speed you would feel comfortable towing a trailer.
-
Anti-Wobble System: The tool-free hitch attachment is a major upgrade. While the 2019 model had a tiny bit of “wiggle,” the G4 is rock steady.
How it Rides: From Pavement to Potholes

The G4 is rated for two bikes at 60 lbs each (120 lbs total). While it isn’t designed for the massive 80 lb. e-bikes we often test, it is the perfect daily driver for traditional MTBs, road bikes, beach cruisers, and even lighter “townie” e-bikes.

In Jackson, your “commute” to the trailhead often involves dirt roads. The G4 handles these well, but as a “Technical Auditor,” I have one caveat: treat it like you’re towing a trailer. If you’re hitting nasty potholes or washboard sections, slow it down. The rack is stout, but the less bounce you subject your bikes to, the better.

-
Not for Heavy E-Bikes: Limited to 60 lbs per bike (Check out the MHS or Door County for heavier builds).
-
Rear Sensors: Like most hitch racks, it will likely trigger your backup camera/sensors on vehicles like a Subaru.
Comparison: Choosing the Right Saris for Your Quiver

Saris has built a deep lineup, and choosing the right one depends on your “heavy lifting” needs:
-
SuperClamp G4: Best for the minimalist or roadie who wants a lightweight (45 lbs), easy-to-maneuver rack that stays on the car all summer.
-
Saris MHS: Go this route if you need a modular system that can expand to 3 bikes or handle heavier fat bikes. Saris MHS-2 Review
-
Saris Door County 2: If you are riding full-sized, heavy e-bikes and don’t want to “deadlift” them onto a rack, the Door County 2 is the ultimate motorized solution. It uses a 7-pin connection to literally lift your bikes off the ground for you.
Overall Impression

The Saris SuperClamp G4 is a sophisticated evolution of a classic design. It’s light enough that it doesn’t kill your fuel economy or make opening your hatch a chore, but it’s strong enough to carry $10k worth of mountain bikes with total peace of mind. We’re already hoping to get our hands on the 4-bike version for those days when the whole crew is heading to the pass.
If you want a trusted brand with a 10-year warranty and a rack that is “Jackson Hole Ready” out of the box, the G4 is a slam dunk.
