My test ride of the Rambler involved multiple moments where I had to pull out my phone to make note of the details they’ve nailed. With over 100,000 riders and 13,000+ five star reviews, I’m clearly not the only admirer of Himiway.
We recently tested one of Himiway’s newest options, the Rambler. Read our comprehensive review below to see how this model stacks up against the fierce competition among e-bikes.
About Himiway
Founded in 2017, Himiway is crushing it. They have customers across North America and Europe with plans for further expansion. Their bread and butter is being the “Long Range Ebike Expert.” They’re constantly increasing the range of their bikes and some of their bikes now claim 60-80 miles on a single charge. Wow.
Himiway is also crushing the finer details of bike manufacturing (pedal assist levels, the saddle, the shocks, usb charging etc.). It was super refreshing to ride such a well designed bike.
Himiway Rambler Sizing
The Rambler comes in just one size that fits adults from 5’2“ – 6’4”. Ordering one is further simplified by the 2-year warranty, free shipping, and 14-day returns. For those looking for an enhanced ride, the bike come at three price points: Basic, Upgraded, and Premium. We tested the upgraded version.
Himiway Rambler Step-Through Frame
This Himiway E-Bike’s step-through frame makes hopping on and off for errands effortless. The frame can carry 330 pounds and the rugged rear rack is made of heat treated aluminum. The quick-release seat post makes it easy to share the bike with friends as well as do on-the-fly changes. The comfy Selle Royal saddle pairs well with the front suspension fork to absorb vibrations whether from cracked city streets or grassy park shortcuts.
The current puncture resistant tires have a width of 2.4 inches gets the job done, but we see opportunities to further increase the comfort and stability at speed by adopting ≥2.6 inch tires in future versions of the Rambler.
500W Motor
The battery is seamlessly incorporated into the downtube while the motor is hidden in the rear hub (or a mid-drive motor is used for the Premium version). The 500W 48V hub motor can deliver a top speed of 20 miles per hour using the throttle. There are 5 pedal assist levels (1-5) and a throttle lever on the left side.
We were pleasantly surprised by the intuitive consistency of the pedal assist levels on the Himiway Rambler. For us, level 1 pedal assist yielded 10 mph, level 2 yielded 13 mph, level 3 yielded 15 mph, level 4 yielded 18 mph, and level 5 yielded 20 mph. We never found the 25mph pedal assist top speed that was promised. Furthermore, if you stop pedaling while in level 5 pedal assist, we found the motor to jolt back to life rather than ease back on when you restart pedaling. Lastly, the motor continues to run for a few seconds after pedaling has stopped.
If your routinely riding up and down steep hills you may find the 500W motor to be a little under powered. For everything else the motor packs plenty of output for zipping around town.
We hope a future tweak to the cadence sensor software will solve this surprises.
Himiway Rambler Battery
The 48V 15AH battery’s position in the downtube adds to the bike’s overall stability and low center of gravity. When pedaling, the battery provides up to 55 miles of range. When testing the bike with pedal assist off to simulate a dead battery, we found the bike easy to pedal and good at coasting. When checking the battery life, speed, or distance traveled, we found the large LCD display to be easily readable.
Components
Himiway keeps components straightforward and easy to maintain. The Himiway Rambler has a single-speed front cassette and an nine-speed rear cassette. If you ever have issues with the hydraulic disc brakes or any other components, the all-inclusive 2-year warranty gets you free diagnoses and maintenance at any of Himiway’s 300 US dealerships. The well tensioned braked allowed for easy stopping of the 61 pound bike.
The bike tech doesn’t stop at the battery and motor. The loud and appealing sounding bell is phenomenal. The stitched hand grips provide great texture. The rear kickstand makes parking the bike a breeze. The brake lights are automatic. The fenders are a great touch.
