Mooncool TK2 Folding E-Trike Review: The Reverse-Gear Game Changer
Mooncool has officially returned from the 2026 Sea Otter Classic with a new flagship: the Mooncool TK2. While we’ve spent the last few years testing the TK1 and the heavy-duty TK Pro in the steep, often snowy streets of Jackson, Wyoming, the TK2 represents a significant technical evolution. Marketed with the mantra “More Comfort, More Confidence, More Control,” this trike aims to solve the “surge” issues of previous models while adding a feature we’ve been begging for: a dedicated reverse gear.
The Evolution of the TK Series

The Mooncool TK2 isn’t just a minor facelift; it’s a ground-up refinement based on two years of rider feedback. Where the original TK1 was a portable commuter and the TK Pro was the “dually pickup” of the line, the TK2 sits in the sweet spot of high-tech utility. Launched on April 17, 2026, it introduces a more refined folding mechanism and a frame designed for a massive 450 lbs payload.
Reverse Assist: A Trike Necessity

If you’ve ever tried to maneuver a 90-lb trike out of a tight garage corner or a crowded bike rack, you know the struggle. The TK2 solves this with a dedicated reverse function. By holding the “-” and “R” buttons, the motor engages in reverse, allowing you to back out of spots effortlessly. It’s a feature rarely seen in this price bracket and one that adds a massive layer of accessibility for riders with limited mobility.
Helical Motor & Sine Wave Smoothness

One of our biggest gripes with the older TK1 was the “surge”—that jarring jolt of power when the cadence sensor kicks in. Mooncool addressed this by utilizing a 500W Helical Gear Motor (1092W Peak) paired with a Sine Wave FOC controller.
During our Teton testing, we noticed an 80% reduction in that initial surge. The power delivery is whisper-quiet and rolls on progressively. With 65Nm of torque, it handles the punchy inclines around Jackson without feeling like it wants to jump out from under you.
TFT Color Interaction
The basic black-and-white displays of the past are gone. The TK2 features a 3.5″ TFT color display that is IPX5 water-resistant. Instead of just numbered levels, the PAS (Pedal Assist System) is categorized into intuitive modes: Eco, Tour, Sport, Sport+, and Turbo. It provides crisp, sunlight-readable data on battery voltage, real-time power output, and even features a Type-C charging port for your phone.
Stability & The Rear Differential

Cornering on three wheels can be sketchy if the rear wheels are locked together. The TK2 uses a rear differential mechanism, allowing the outside wheel to rotate faster than the inside wheel during a turn. This prevents the “tippy” feeling common in budget trikes and keeps all three 20×3.0″ fat tires firmly planted on the pavement, even when navigating off-camber gravel paths.
Cargo Capacity & Utility

The TK2 remains a “workhorse.” With a 450 lbs total load capacity, it outclasses many 2-wheel cargo bikes.
-
Front Basket: Sturdy tubing, perfect for a pet carrier or groceries.
-
Rear Basket: Integrated into the frame with a more rigid feel than previous versions.
-
Low-Step Frame: The 6061 aluminum frame features a ultra-low step-thru height, making it accessible for riders of all mobility levels.
Hydraulic Stopping Power

Weight requires stopping power. The TK2 is fitted with Starunion Hydraulic Disc Brakes featuring large 180mm alloy rotors. Unlike mechanical brakes that require a heavy hand, these provide consistent, one-finger braking. They also include an integrated motor cut-off and a parking brake, which is essential for loading cargo on an incline.
Mooncool TK2 Pros & Cons

Pros:
-
Smooth Power: Helical motor and Sine Wave controller eliminate the “trike lurch.”
-
Reverse Gear: Makes parking and maneuvering a breeze.
-
Safety Lighting: Triple rear brake lights with integrated turn signals.
-
Certified Safety: Fully UL 2849 and UL 2271 certified for the entire electrical system.
-
Comfort: The vacuum foam seat and 40mm suspension fork soak up “chip-seal” road vibrations.
Cons:
-
Weight: At nearly 90 lbs (N.W.), it’s a beast to lift into a vehicle, even when folded.
-
Top Speed: Limited to 15.5 MPH for safety; speed demons may find it slow.
-
Charging Time: 7–9 hours for a full charge on the standard 2A charger.
Overall Impression

The Mooncool TK2 is the most “grown-up” e-trike we’ve tested to date. It moves away from the “bike with an extra wheel” feel and into the territory of a legitimate light electric vehicle. For $1,399, you are getting hydraulic brakes, a color display, and a reverse gear—features that usually command a $2,000+ price tag.
