Mokwheel Inverter Review: A Solar Revolution Tested in the Tetons

In the world of e-bikes, range anxiety has always been the silent killer of a good adventure. We’ve all been there: staring at a dropping battery bar deep in the backcountry, calculating if we have enough juice to get back to the trailhead.

But what if your bike wasn’t just a vehicle? What if it was a self-sustaining power station?

We took the Mokwheel Inverter and their foldable solar panel kit and paired it with the Mokwheel Onyx—perhaps the best e-bike we have ever ridden—to see if this technology is actually viable for the true outdoorsman.

The verdict? This isn’t just an accessory. It is a complete revolution in outdoor power usage. Mokwheel is light years ahead of the rest of the industry with this tech.

The Tech: A World’s First

Mokwheel claims this is the world’s first technology of its kind, and after testing it, I believe them. The concept is brilliant in its simplicity but complex in its execution: You connect the 1000W Inverter to your e-bike’s battery (compatible with the Basalt, Obsidian, Scoria, and Onyx models).

Suddenly, that massive lithium-ion battery sitting in your downtube isn’t just for turning the wheels—it’s a generator.

But the real magic happens when you plug in the solar panels. The solar array expands wide to capture every possible ray of high-altitude sun. It charges the battery while the inverter allows you to power your devices continuously.

We took the Mokwheel Inverter and their foldable solar panel kit and paired it with the brand-new, mid-drive Mokwheel Onyx E-Bike—perhaps the best full-suspension mountain machine we have ever ridden—to see if this technology is actually viable for the true backcountry outdoorsman.

Mokwheel Onyx

We set up a basecamp deep in the National Forest, miles away from the nearest outlet. In the past, multi-day e-bike trips were impossible unless you had legs of steel to pedal a heavy bike once the battery died. Human power was the only option for overnighters.

Mokwheel just changed the game.

The inverter itself is incredibly lightweight at just 3.53 lbs, and the panels weigh in around 9 lbs. Everything fits into a sleek carry bag that straps easily onto the bike. It’s not a ton of weight to add when you consider the output you get in return.

We weren’t just charging phones. We were running a mobile office and a campsite. The inverter features AC outlets, USB-C, and USB-A ports, meaning we could plug in just about anything.

To give you an idea of just how much power the Mokwheel battery + Inverter combo holds, here is the breakdown of what it can handle on a single charge cycle (not even counting the solar input replenishing it):

  • iPhone 15: 43 charges
  • Laptop (Mac): 15 charges
  • Action Camera (GoPro): 136 charges
  • Drone (DJI): 25 charges
  • Starlink/Projector (50W): 16 hours of run time
  • Electric Skillet (600W): 1.5 hours of cooking time
  • Coffee Maker (300W): 2.7 hours

For the bikepacker or hunter, this is game-changing. You can cook breakfast on an electric skillet, brew coffee, charge your drone, and top off your GPS, all from the bike that got you there.

The 100-Mile Dream

For those looking to push past the standard range, Mokwheel also offers a combo where you can carry a spare battery + the inverter. This setup is for the rider who wants to push past that 100-mile ride number or cross the country on two wheels.

With the solar panels deployed during a midday lunch break, you are actively putting range back into your tank. It completely bridges the gap between a “day cruiser” and a “touring vehicle.”

Pros:

  • True off-grid capability with Solar integration.
  • Inverter is surprisingly light (3.53 lbs).
  • High output (can run skillets and coffee makers).
  • Carry bag system makes transport easy.

Cons:

  • You’ll never want to ride a standard e-bike again.

The outdoor industry loves buzzwords, but Mokwheel has delivered actual innovation. The ability to seamlessly switch between riding mode and power-station mode makes the Mokwheel Inverter (and the rest of their Power Station lineup) the most versatile tools in the shed.

This system effectively eliminates the “tether” to civilization. Whether you are riding across the country, hunting in the backcountry, or just setting up a romantic date night with lights and music in the middle of nowhere, Mokwheel provides the power to do it.
