Kaer 1400MD Gun Safe Review: Home Protection for Hunters

As an elk hunter based in the Tetons, my gear is a massive investment. I recently put the Plano Diverge Series Rifle Case through the wringer for my fall hunt (read that review here), and while that case is my go-to for rugged transport, I needed a secondary “insurance policy” for the home. When you invest thousands of dollars into technical outerwear, remote navigation tools, and precision firearms, your home storage needs to be just as dialed as your backcountry loadout. Keeping your firearms safely secured between seasons is the final phase of auditing your complete layout of the best big game hunting gear.

In a house with kids, “out of sight, out of mind” isn’t enough. You need a dedicated lockbox that doesn’t break the bank but keeps your gray matter at ease. Enter the Kaer 1400MD Gun Safe.

Built for the Nooks and Crannies

The first thing that struck me about the Kaer 1400MD was the footprint. It’s significantly more compact than I expected, which is a major win for mountain living. Whether you’re in a garage, a mudroom, or a cramped storage unit, this safe tucks into those tight nooks perfectly. Even with the door swung open, it doesn’t dominate the room.

Assembly and Construction

I’ve vetted a lot of gear in demanding environments, and I appreciate simplicity. I had this unit unboxed and fully assembled in under an hour. At a sale price of around $229, you’re getting a lot of steel for the money. To put that in perspective, I’ve tested hardshell cases that cost more than this entire safe.

The rivet design gives it a rugged, “Teton-tested” aesthetic that doesn’t look like a cheap locker. It feels like a piece of equipment, not an eyesore.

Storage: Handguns, ARs, and the Shotgun Catch

The 1400MD is advertised for 10-12 guns. In my testing, it handled handguns and AR-style platforms (assault rifles) with ease. However, for the bird hunters out there, take note: The cabinet was too short for my shotgun with the top shelf installed. To fit the longer barrel, I had to remove the shelf entirely.

Technical Audit Note: The foam rack is functional, but as a gun enthusiast, I’d love to see Kaer introduce skinnier slots or adjustable barrel rests to accommodate different calibers more securely.

Quick Access and Security

When it comes to home protection, speed is survival. The digital keypad is responsive, and the included magnetic sensor light is a game-changer for finding your gear in a dark garage or during a midnight emergency.

The dual-entry (Electronic + Key) is standard, but the reliability at this $250-ish price point is what makes it a bargain. It’s the perfect spot to store your pews between hunting seasons while keeping them 100% inaccessible to children.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Insane Value: At ~$230 on sale, it’s a steal for a multi-gun locker.

  • Fast Setup: Sub-one-hour assembly for a single person.

  • Home Safety: Reliable digital lock keeps firearms away from kids.

  • Compact: Great for small-space storage without sacrificing capacity.

Cons:

  • Height Issues: Requires shelf removal for long-barrel shotguns.

  • Foam Density: Racks could be more versatile for varying barrel sizes.

Overall Impression

If you’re a hunter or a home-defense enthusiast looking for a “set it and forget it” storage solution, the Kaer 1400MD is a robust choice. It’s the home-base equivalent to my Plano Diverge field case—reliable, functional, and fairly priced. Bolt it to the wall, set your code, and rest easy knowing your most valuable tools are locked down.

Verdict: 4.8/5 – A must-buy for hunters looking for high-capacity storage on a budget.
