Katadyn BeFree Review: The Packable Water Filter Every Backcountry Kit Needs
If you’ve spent any significant time in the backcountry, you’re likely familiar with the old-school Platypus bottles—the original kings of packability. However, the game has evolved. During our recent technical audits in the Tetons, we’ve been puting the Katadyn BeFree Filter paired with the HydraPak 1L (32 fl oz) SoftFlask to the test. From fast-moving alpine streams and local creeks to high-elevation lakes, this setup has become a mandatory staple in our backcountry kits.
Packability: The Hard-Bottle Killer

The standout feature of the BeFree/HydraPak combo is its ability to adapt to the “dead space” in your pack. Unlike traditional hard-sided filtered bottles (like a Grayl or a filtered Nalgene), the HydraPak SoftFlask shrinks as you drink. When it’s empty, it rolls up into a tiny footprint that fits into a pocket.

If you’re a technical minimalist, you know that space is premium. This setup disappears into your backpack, making it the perfect “emergency” filter that you actually forget is there until you need it.
Ease of Use: Fill, Screw, Flow

The engineering here is refreshingly simple—so simple even a kid could master it in seconds. Which is amazing for families introducing their children to the outdoors.
#1 Screw off the BeFree filter head.

#2 Fill the wide-mouth HydraPak bottle with raw water from a stream or lake.

#3 Screw on the filter and you are ready to drink, no pumps, no powders just water that’s been filtered against Chemicals, Microorganisms and even Microplastic which have found their way sadly into our waterways.

The flow rate on the BeFree is one of the fastest we’ve tested. You don’t have to “pump” or wait; the water flows naturally with a light squeeze.
The “Squirt” Nozzle Advantage

The filter nozzle is designed similarly to a standard water bottle “squirt” top. It’s intuitive to drink from and allows you to easily squirt clean water into other containers, cook pots, or even use it for a quick wound cleaning in an emergency. The HydraPak material is also incredibly durable, handling the pressure of a hard squeeze without the fear of the seams bursting—a common fail point with lower-quality soft bottles.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
-
Unbeatable Packability: Rolls up to nothing when empty.
-
Rapid Flow Rate: No pumping required; just squeeze and drink.
-
HydraPak Durability: Tougher and more versatile than legacy soft bottles.
Cons:
-
Filter Care: Like all hollow-fiber filters, you need to ensure it doesn’t freeze in winter conditions.
TETON Tested Overall Impression

Whether you’re on a high-output trail run through Cascade Canyon or a multi-day splitboard mission, the 1L Katadyn BeFree + HydraPak SoftFlask is a “must-have.” It replaces the clunky weight of extra water with a lightweight, packable solution that turns every Teton stream into a refill station.
