Patagonia Women’s R1 Air Fleece Full Zip Hoody Review | Performance Tested
The Women’s R1 Air Fleece Full Zip Hoody integrates this seamlessly; 100% recycled polyester jacquard fleece with hollow-core yarns allows for technical performance and non-stop movement from the mountains to the beach.
The first thing I noticed was how the fabric is designed.
The R1 Air uses a zigzag textured fleece that feels soft and breathable while trapping warmth without making you feel damp or swampy. The fabric wicks moisture fast and dries quickly, making it great for long days when the weather is constantly changing.
Living on the West Coast has taught me that balance matters. At the beginning of a hike, run, or skin, you’re moving quickly uphill and working up a sweat; yet, the moment you reach an incredibly windy ridge, a lightweight protective layer like the R1 air is ideal against the elements and the journey back down.
How does the Patagonia Women’s R1 Full Zip Hoody Fit

If I had to describe it in three words: flattering, athletic, comfortable.
It sits close to the body without feeling tight, the fabric has a good amount of stretch giving you full range of motion while scrambling or reaching overhead, and it layers easily under a shell. Personally, I wear this hoody as my main base layer. With this fitting fairly snug, (I’m 5’2”, 120lb, wearing an XS) I choose to only wear a sports bra, fitted tank, or fitted long sleeve underneath. If you’re not keen on a tight fit around your neck, you may want to size up, as I find fully zipping this hoody up to be on the tighter side.
Zippers, Pockets, Hood

The full zip design makes temperature control easy, while two hand pockets sit high enough to work with a pack that has a hip belt. That small detail makes a big difference on longer missions!
There is also a fair sized chest pocket on the left side that can fit an iphone 16 Pro or your favorite trail snacks. The hood fits snug without blocking vision, an easy fit for under a helmet or other hoods. A bonus design detail is the off-shoulder seams so it sits comfortably under your pack straps.

Overall Impression

The Patagonia Women’s R1 Air Fleece Full Zip Hoody is a go to layer for athletes and active individuals looking to come prepared for high output days. A reliably breathable layer for when you push the pace yet light enough to forget that you packed it in the first place.
If your adventures include day to day errands to a well deserved sweat, this hoody earns a spot in the kit.
