Macfox X2 E-Bike Review
The Macfox X2 is a moped-style ebike that comes into its own when ripping on the throttle. This model is an upgraded version of the brand’s popular X1 electric bike, now outfitted with a full suspension setup and higher capacity battery. But is this sequel to the Macfox X1 really better than the original? We recently reviewed this new moped-style ebike to see if the extra features justify the significant price bump.
About Macfox

Back in May, we tested out the first-generation Macfox X1 model. It’s a moped-style ebike set up as a single-speed hardtail with a 500W motor. We appreciated the X1’s straightforward design that delivers a very fun cruising experience without overcomplicating the ebike.
The new X2, however, swaps simplicity for some serious spec upgrades aimed at riders searching for a more fully loaded electric bike. Highlighted updates on the X2 include dual rear shocks, a 7-speed drivetrain, a more powerful motor, and a battery with twice the capacity.
Macfox X2 Moped-Style Design

Both the Macfox X1 and X2 embrace the moped-style build that’s been growing in popularity over the last several years, commonly seen along city streets and beach boardwalks these days. The X2 currently costs $1,699, which is nearly double the price of the X1 model ($999), but both are much more affordable than rival moped-style ebikes on the market.
The X2 is arguably a competitor of the popular Super73 electric bikes which share the same design but cost more than twice as much. For performance on a budget, riders who like the moped look and feel will be drawn to the Macfox X2. The bike is recommended for riders between 5’3 and 6’6, so almost everyone can enjoy it. Upon delivery, the X2 was easy to assemble and we were cruising around in no time.
Macfox X2 Rear Hub Motor

The X2 gets its pace from a 750W rear hub motor that reaches a top speed of 28 mph. The peak output power is 1000W which is a serious upgrade from the X1’s 500W motor, and you’ll notice it. This model is a fun, sporty, and powerful machine that not only looks similar to a moped but also has that characteristic rear-wheel-drive feeling.

Some electric bikes feel awkward or unbalanced because of their hub motor rather than a mid-drive unit but on the X2, that is part of the fun. The nimble handling and punchy power made this capable ebike an instant staff favorite with our team.
Pedal Assist vs Throttle

There are 5 pedal assist levels but the throttle mode is where the Macfox X2 Ebike truly excels. The motor kicks in with very little lag which means the bike is fast off the line and can consistently make it up to its top speed. Riders can pedal if they want, but the fixed moped-style seat often limits leg extension and leads to pedaling with high knees.
To us, the X2 works best when using the twist throttle and zooming along your route pedal-free. Like anything, the motor has its limits and may need some help getting up the steepest climbs. You’ll have to either gather speed on the approach or get into an easy gear on pedal assist due to the cadence sensor.
Macfox X2 Battery

Compared to the previous generation, the X2 nearly doubles its range with a 20Ah battery. The standard package comes with a single battery but riders can opt for the long-range setup that fits a second battery neatly underneath the seat. The estimated range of each of the batteries is 45 miles on a full charge. The battery is lockable to the frame with a key and is easy to remove when necessary.
Gearing

Another upgrade is that the Macfox X2 swaps the X1’s singe-speed setup for a Shimano 7-speed drivetrain. The brand has installed those low-quality SiS shifters that are ubiquitous on entry-level ebikes these days, but it shouldn’t impact performance too much. There are front and rear hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm to provide strong braking, especially for such a high-powered ebike.
The 20” wheels are matched with 4.0” CTS fat tires with a light tread pattern that suits a variety of conditions. Despite being a fat bike, the small-diameter wheels and motor didn’t perform as well as expected in loose sand. The ideal spots for this beast are smooth surfaces like local roads or the boardwalk where you can take advantage of its throttle and higher speeds.
Full Suspension

The most important improvement, however, is the rear suspension system. The dual shocks provide a much more comfortable ride over pesky potholes or off-road adventures. They aren’t the most plush shocks we’ve tested, but they definitely smooth out the ride. At the front, the double-crown suspension fork is a durable component that looks the part, too. The pedals are metal instead of less durable plastic and have large pins for improved shoe grip, perfect for riding over the rough stuff.
Standout Features

During testing, we couldn’t help but notice that the X2 came with all the bells and whistles. Beyond the conventional (but not always included on ebikes) accessories like a push-button horn and integrated lights, this model goes a step further. The behemoth front headlight is impressively bright and can be toggled between high- and low-beam modes. There’s a button to switch on the headlight in those modes, but the smaller daytime light is always on when riding.
Another great feature is the turn signal lights that can be controlled on the handlebars and flash at both the front and rear of the bike.
How Comfortable is the Bike to Ride?

The flat, double saddle feels comfortable and there’s plenty of room for a riding partner. There’s a sturdy lift handle at the rear of the seat that can help pivot the hefty ebike. The X2 weighs in at 65 lbs. but seems lighter, probably due to the skeletonized frame and agile handling. If you want even more options to choose from, you can purchase the optional fenders or frame bag made to look like an old-school motorcycle fuel tank.

Overall Impression

While it’s not the most premium model out there, the Macfox X2 is an affordable way to get your hands on a moped-style ebike that’s guaranteed to be fun wherever you ride. Priced at ($1,699) the Macfox X2 is a fair deal considering the major upgrades including the full suspension and spec improvements. For the chronic throttle twisters out there, the high-speed X2 won’t disappoint.
