Retrospec Valen Rev 3 Review: TETON Tested Moto-Style E-Bike
Most e-bikes are trying to look like high-end mountain bikes. The Retrospec Valen Rev 3 goes the other way, leaning into a classic American moto-design that feels like a vintage cafe racer. We put this bike through the ringer on the dirt, gravel, and paved pathways of the Tetons to see how it actually stacks up.
Moto Style, Bike Path Etiquette
The biggest hurdle with “moto-style” e-bikes is the perception on the trail. The Valen Rev 3 hits the social sweet spot here. It’s capped at a 20mph top speed, which means you can roll through town with that aggressive look without pissing off the local commuters on the bike paths. It’s a “Class 2” setup that respects the rules of the road while still offering throttle-heavy fun.
Valen Rev 3 vs. Koa Rev+: What’s the Difference?

It’s important to see how the Valen sits compared to Retrospec’s other flagship, the Koa Rev+.
If you want a traditional bicycle feel with gears, stick to the Koa. If you want a low-maintenance, flickable cruiser that feels like a moped, the Valen is the choice. However, if your target is clean urban commuting, grocery runs, or an easy-access frame layout for the whole family, check out our Retrospec Beaumont Rev+ Review, which features an upright Dutch-style step-through geometry built exclusively for pavement comfort.
-
The Koa Rev+ is a traditional 26” fat-tire bike with Hydraulic brakes and an 8-speed drivetrain.

-
The Valen Rev 3 uses smaller 20” wheels and a “Banana Boat” moto seat. It relies on a Single Speed design and Mechanical brakes.

If you want a traditional bicycle feel with gears, stick to the Koa. If you want a low-maintenance, flickable cruiser that feels like a moped, the Valen is the choice.
Terrain Versatility: Dirt, Gravel, and Roads

Don’t let the slick look fool you—the 20″ x 4″ puncture-resistant fat tires on this bike ride over everything. We tested it on loose gravel, dirt, and Jackson bike paths. Because the bike is heavy, it stays planted. It doesn’t wash out in corners like a skinnier tire would.
A Note on the Fork: The front fork on the Rev 3 is largely for aesthetics. It’ll take the edge off a pothole, but for real technical dampening, you’re relying on the high-volume tires. There is no rear suspension coil here, so it’s a rigid, classic “cafe racer” ride.
The Weight and Hardware

This is a heavy-duty machine. Tipping the scales at 78 lbs, this isn’t a bike you’re going to be carrying around. It requires a heavy-duty rack if you’re hauling it. To stop that mass, Retrospec uses Tektro mechanical disc brakes. They provide solid, consistent stopping power, which is essential because this bike is fast off the line.
We liked moving this heavier bike around with the Yakima OnRamp LX Rack with its removable ramp so no heavy lifting required.
Maintenance: The Single Speed Advantage

One of the best features for a daily driver is the single-speed drivetrain. Unlike the Koa Rev+, there is no derailleur to bend or gears to index. It is remarkably low maintenance. Retrospec also included an “easy-change” rear wheel removal system—a massive win for hub-motor bikes where changing a flat is usually a nightmare.
The Lineup: Rev 2 vs. Rev 3 vs. Rev+

Retrospec has tiered this family based on range and tech:

Overall Impression

The Retrospec Valen Rev 3 is a blast to ride. It’s a low-maintenance cruiser that handles dirt, gravel, and roads with a style that makes people jealous. It isn’t trying to be a technical mountain bike like the Aventon Aventure M, but for a stylish daily driver that won’t break the bank, this moto-style e-bike is a TETON Tested winner.
