DENVER, CO – Man, it’s tough to beat a good concert. I stepped into the Ogden Theater theater and felt that the vibe was a bit harsh. There was definitely a struggle to make my way through the crowd with my camera. At first, I blamed it on the fact that the show was for ages 16 and up. Youngsters these days, they have no respect. But it wasn’t their fault, and I’m happy to see the youth enjoying such a positive experience.
If there was a finger to point, it would be in my direction. I was having a rough day and I dragged that with me. Thank god for music and live concerts in particular. All negativity quickly vanished as I let the sounds wash over me.
And the music was superb. Elephant Revival as a collective proved to be very in tune with each other. I’m sure they were working extremely hard to make that happen and also to allow for spontaneity. However, you’d never be able to tell it by the looks on their faces. They were all so calm and content looking, even when they picked up the tempo and busted out into improvisational explosions that ignited the crowd in dance.
Their jamming was a lot of fun, but to me, the band’s most impressive display of talent came each time they slowed it down and showed off their voices. All five members took part in the vocals and the lead singer changed from one song to the next. As for me, I honestly couldn’t get enough of washboard player, Bonnie Paine. She sent quivering, almost eerie sounds into the crowd with her voice that could have been mistaken for an instrument at times if one’s eyes were closed.
If I could change one thing about the show it would be to ask for more Bonnie. Let her take the lead as much as possible. Aside from that, the night’s music was a real treat. Check out Elephant Revival the next time they come home to Colorado.
